One of my friends gave me a lovely rhinegold turnout rug with a hood which had only been used a handful of times yesterday. Put in on the boy last night and left him all nice and snug in his field, he is 22 and trace clipped so does need one. This morning, I arrived at the yard to find him in his field, wet and shivering, rug in a muddy heap! little bugger has rolled and taken it off....his previous owner is my YO and she told me he would often take his rugs off when she had him and the only ones he seems to keep on are horseware ones...he has a rhino one but it is being repaired at the mo as it was ripped in the field, and an amigo med weight which is still wet from the other day...aaggh can anyone suggest a way of getting him to keep it on?

I can't help I'm afraid but Beau does it the other way around!! She has a rug with seized clips on the legstraps so I have added a fillet string. Every so often I will get there and find she has the leg straps on!! Only way I can get the rug off is to undo and drop behind her so I can encourage her to sep out!

Would a roller or elasticated surcingle hold it on?

Is it a warm rug and as it's so mild he felt a bit hot and wriggled and wriggled until he got it off? (and then regretted it :)

Can only suggest doing up the surcingles tighter or putting the wet one back on if it's nearly dried out - better that than naked if it's going to be a wet night.

I bathed and hair-dried my daughter's shetland cross one day in March as we had a PC tack and turnout competition, then turned him out with a fab warm rug which he didn't normally need. He was stood next to it the next morning, plastered with mud and looking mighty pleased with himself. But he never did it again, so I think perhaps he was just a bit too warm that night. Or he has an evil sense of humour...

Does it have surcingles and a tail strap or leg straps? My 2yo will take his stable rug off if he feels like it (usually if he's too hot) but leg straps usually hold them on. Also if a rug is a bit big they find it easier to get them off. You might need to use leg straps AND a tail strap or fillet string....
