We have recently brought a new pony for a friend's 12yr old daughter, it is a bit mareish but otherwise a perfect step up from her 1st pony and will teach her a lot. In her previous home she was rugged up to the eyeballs and lived out, in the last 4weeks we have had her I have reduced the rugs and for a few days she went out naked. One evening we brought her in to ride and her back was wet so I rubbed her off dried it as much as possible before gently gradually girthing and putting on the saddle, then walking her about a bit before putting on the lightweight jockey, on entering the school ( not particularly deep sand and rubbber) she tried to roll and got a sharp telling off in the process then worked with jockey on no problem. This morning her back was completely dry and for no apparent reason when warming up withrider on board her legs started to buckle and she tried to go down, she got a good wack and ridden very positively forward and worked through it. Although it didnt suprise me when her back was wet and possibly uncomfortable I was suprised this morning and was interested in other peoples opinions/experiences to know whether I am doing the right thing to overcome this blip? Thanks for reading!

It sounds as if it could be an 'old habit' rather than a damp back. Both feet out of stirrups incase jockey has to jump off, growl with the voice and a sharp slap with the whip!
