We are nearly three weeks now with sloppy poo / diarrhoea (not sure what the definition of each is really, it is not clear but very wet, not really formed in anyway, more like cow pats)

The vet started him on something to calm his stomach but after a week not working so took stool sample and blood tests for kidney / liver damage and full panel - poo sample clear, no worms, low egg count, blood tests all in normal range except for protein which is low but they expected that as apparently that is normal with this long having the squirts.

He had a belly edema but that has now gone, he has days where he's really lacking energy and days when he's a little better but nowhere near 100%

He is a good weight, not fat and is eating well, hasn't really lost any weight throughout this

Now they're trying him with anti biotics and kaolin chalk

I'm looking for experiences of others - anyone had a pony with something similar?

I don't think there is enough information for anyone to give any meaningful support. You have your vet's advice - that is probably the best to go with for now! Good luck.

Go with your vet, but do ask the vet whether putting the horse on a pre biotic short term and a probiotic long term might be the solution after the course of antibiotics has ended. Pink powder is very good for this and cheaper than a lot of other probiotics.

Have you considered larval cyathostomiasis? Obviously I can't say that's what's wrong with your horse. However I had my horse over a year, wormed regularly etc and then the diarrhoea started. There's no cure for it but good management & support is vital.

I had never heard of that missmatch but will look it up and discuss with my vet, from initial Google searches it does look like a possibility.

Thank you

Wheels, discuss with your vet about drenching your pony with a fresh dropping from a healthy horse.

Many years ago we had a school pony that was suffering from liquid dung the vet collected a dropping from a healthy horse, added it to some warm water, then gave it to the pony using a tube that goes up the nose and into the stomach.

The flora in the healthy dropping re populated the sick pony's gut and he got better within days and lived a healthy life for many more years.

If the poo sample was clear low egg count and the horse is lacking energy ,was the blood sample checked for tape worms as they will not show up in a egg count ?
