My friends old pony has got lice. She has treated him with lice powder but he still has them but not as many has he had. I know you can use frontline on there legs for mites but can you use it for lice?
Also ive been told there is an injection thet treats for lice and also worms  ive not heard of that before is it true. Thanks

There are lots of products on the market and most if not all of them work just go to your local horse and pony outlet and purchase a shampoo especially for lice. Also i believe you need to use the mane and tail comb to comb out the lice and their eggs, correct me someone if i am wrong

Louse powder does beggar all to kill lice!

Try bathing him in an insecticidal shampoo and then using a generous application of coopers fly repellent plus (as directed on the box). It seems expensive but it really is worth it and it lasts ages.

As CBFan says, louse powders are pathetic at treating louse infestations. And that's straight from my vet's mouth! A double injection of dectomax is very effective against feather mites but I have never heard of it being used for lice. An insecticidal shampoo will do the trick but my personal favourite is Frontline spray, the dog strength one. Frontline may be kinder to an oldie as all you usually need to do is part the mane and rub it well in there, ditto the dock, then along the spine and down either side of the neck. Don't just spray, you have to rub it well in (use a rubber glove) so that it gets right down to the horse's skin.

Whatever product you use, you MUST repeat it 10 days later. The products only kill the adults. The eggs are unharmed and hatch out in 10 days and promptly re-infest the horse. The Dectomax injection gets quite expensive because of this - you have to have a call-out twice, unless your friend can take her horse to the vets. Remember too, she needs to treat all grooming brushes, numnahs, rugs etc. And warn her that lice aren't picky and don't mind a human host!!!!!!

The problem with the powders, is that most native ponies have such thick coats that the powder never reaches the skin ! You can have a jab from the vet that is actually a wormer, but it will kill the adult lice, it is not expensive, but when you add the call out, it all adds up - you do need the 2nd jab 10 days later. You need to clip the thick coat off, shampoo really well with Dermoline Shampoo and Cooper Fly Repellant works, but you need to re-do this 10 days later, personally I'd do it again a 3rd time.

when my little pony had lice the vet was out on a visit anyway so gave him an injection and then left one for me to do 10 days later. also washed in insecticidal shampoo. everything that came into contact with him eg brushes, rugs etc was washed and disinfected and i also moved him away from his stables and surrounding trees (anything he had scratched on)for a few weeks because the lice can only live off of the host for 2 weeks so that all the ones on the trees etc would die off.
it worked a treat - haven't seen any since and that was a few years ago!
