My 23 year old pony has been diagnosed with liver failure.. his only symptom of this is weight loss. He has always been a fussy eater but was normally a good doer until approximately 8 - 10 weeks ago. His weight has dropped off him dramatically and I had the vet out 3 weeks ago to do teeth and take blood...... this is how they have diagnosed the liver failure.
Vet says if he was a human he'd be on the list for a transplant it's so bad. also advised to keep him on a low potein, hi energy feed and not to feed alfalfa..... They suggested that there were herbal items on the market but that they don't work ...I don't have a clue what to do now...... i've read so much on vitamin b injections, milk thistle (I've been using this for 3 weeks now)
I just feel there should be more I can do...... although he's a fussy eater he is eating.... but I don't know if I'm feeding him the correct feed.... sugar beet, course mix, bruised barley and just grass, lots of good quality hay and he's out in the field.... he's getting a multi vit and milk thistle every day also.
Does anyone out there have any info / advice they could give me?

hi i had a a horse with liver diease/faliure the gave me lactose witch is a high engery syrup to keep her going vit b injectios a product called vi sorbin witch is inriched with all be vits and iron to keep the body boosted. Yes you have it right low protin by low protin it has to be below 10% if you speak to D% horrel and tell them your problem and they will come up with a diet for you. Milk thistle is great but can take up to six weeks to get into the system. Global herbs do a liver tonic called restore i used that as well that is very good! Do you know if it is ragwort or not that has caused it?. my girl lost weight thats why i had bloods done and thats how i found out and thats all the syptoms she had within a couple of days she started walking a bit wobberley so had vet out again and she just said that what the liver does when the toxins start to reliase i asked if she was in pain at these time they say no thats keep trying to get the meds in to her so the next she was still wobbling but she started to walk into stuff and breathe funny so called vet again they come out and sure her and said she was on her last legs the anioma from the toxins from the liver had burnt her gums away burnt the inside of her lungs and it had made her blind the vets said they could put her on fluid threopary and but her in a sling but at this point i knew it was time she looked so un happy so i had her put down, But basically she lost weight and with in a couple of days of having the bloods taken she was gone R.I.P Star! if you need any more info on anything pm and i will try and help you. P.S she had no signs of mania head preesing judiaunce or anything!
