Pony with no natural grease in his coat

A bit of history. My 21 year old gelding has had a rough winter. He started headshaking tail end of last year. All sorted now. He had a lot of Danilon and was kept in for weeks as he was better in than out. Closely followed by mud fever on being turned out. Another stretch in his stable as ground was very wet.

He has grown a very long coat over the last two winters. His coat is coming out in handfuls at the moment. His skin doesn't appear to be dry, as in, not flakey. His coat is very shiney and healthy looking.

My YO actually noticed the lack of natural grease this am when we were talking about his mudfever. He has never mud fever before and we were surprised he had it now. We had put it down to a lowered immune system.

He is currently fed: Fast Fibre, Non Molassed Hi Fi, Brewers Yeast, Mag Ox, Salt and recently started on Micronised Linseed.

Has anyone any ideas how to get him producing grease? Or what has caused him not to produce grease?

Adding oil to the diet should help, years ago we used to swear by cod liver oil for making coats shiny and waterproof, although nowadays it is frowned on by most. Micronised linseed should do th job, it might just take a while to get in his system. Hope he's waterproof soon bless him!
