I've just clipped my pony out (he is clipped out all year round) and I've noticed he has some scabs all the way up his hind legs. He is a cob X so he gets quite hairy. I've ruled out lice/mites as there is nothing visible and he is not itchy. I've cleaned them up and put some sudocrem on them but I'd quite like to find out what they are or what the cause may be. Anyone have any idea?

Sounds like they could be caused by stable flies. They feed on the legs & belly & leave crusty scabs. Wash off legs & smother in sudocreme, daily.

sounds like sallanders and mallanders aka grease ?? pig oil and flower of sulphur will soon sort this :)

(patch test 1st)

Could be harvest mites. When my cob had them ,I could n't see anything . He just had scabby itchy hind legs, kept stamping and chewing his legs .

Certainly wouldn't rule out mud fever. It doesn't need mud! The other most likely is cob knee - the grease build up cobs get which forms waxy looking scab like lumps.

My guy has had fairly resistant mud fever for the last month for the first time ever, so I would definitely be considering that as the potential culprit.
