Help my pony has sunburn on his nose and its very difficult to get Sudacrem on as he does not like creams sprays etc. any tips would be very grateful

Would a full face fly mask be any use? You can get ones specifically designed to give UV protection, although I think most fine mesh ones would help in that way. I had a Cashel Crusader one for my mare, with nose and ears. Really rated it!

Baby Sun cream ideally as sudacrem is not something you would want to use in the sun!!
My very pink nosed mare wears a flymask with nose cover and that has been working well!

Actually sudocrem is one of the best total sun blocks you can find. I always either use sudocrem or Filtabac for pink noses. Works a treat. It is zinc cream which in itself is a 100% sun block.

No tips for putting it on a pony that doesn't like it though!!

I just use sudocream, especially if his nose is looking a bit pink (it actually goes an orangey colour first?). It's really thick and will last a couple of days. Or have you tried suncream that isn't perfumed, could it be the smell he doesn't like? I would also make sure it's warm as well before applying as mine hates it when it's cold. Try feeding him whilst you put it on to keep him busy.

Thanks I'll try warming it up, we have had some sun through the days but was not expecting it to burn him yet :/

Highly recommend Barrier soothing sunburn lotion. Its the perfect consistency and easy to apply.Has an SP factor as well.

Proper horse sunblock is great its like a solid block you need to warm to rub on but stays on, my made was fine qwith it but hated sudocreme and other options.

However, last year she was in a different field with no buttercup and no sunburn! Definiately reaction to buttercup, it makes their skin sensitive!

Sorry but I'd exercise extreme caution with sudocrem as a sun block - it's very good for treating sunburn (and other wounds) but horse can get a severely burnt nose when using it in place of sun protection. Although it has zinc oxide in it also has lanolin, benzyl alcohol (as an antibacterial agent) and paraffin in which can all exacerbate the effects of the sun in susceptible animals and can further induce hypersensitivity, which makes any burning of the skin much worse. There's a reason why sunblock is not one of the listed therapeutic uses of sudocrem.....

I cut out a square of old t shirt (to size required to cover pink nose) and tack it to the bottom edge of fly mask. It's easy to replace when it gets grubby or will come away from fly mask if it gets caught on anything. Have found it more effective than full face fly mask. Tried various sun creams but this works the best.
