No matter how nicely my pony is working in trot and canter - I just can't get him to stay focused in the walk. As soon as we walk he immediately pokes his nose out and blocks against me... I also struggle keeping purpose to the work and getting him to use his hind.

He's perfectly fine mostly in trot and canter.

Any tips?

Thank you in advance :)

Your heavy hand in the walk is causing the "lack of purpose" and not using the hind end. You are blocking him, not the other way round. If he can't walk in an outline, I would suggest he isn't trotting and cantering in one either, not really. Stop hanging onto his head, let your reins out and use your legs. You should find he goes forwards more enthusiastically then, that's the basis for working in an outline, you can't force it from the head end. When he's going forward properly and consistently, start working more on transitions and circles and changes of rein, really focussing on riding the moves accurately and having quick responses leg and rein. He should start using his hind end better then. Again, when he's going well consistently, increase the difficulty of the work with transitions within the pace eg working trot to medium trot, smaller turns and circles, lateral work eg shoulder in. This will strengthen and supple the horse, giving him the muscles to work in a rounded outline which you can start to ask him to keep for short periods, interspersed with long and low work. Essentially, stop focussing on the outline. It will come naturally as the work progresses over many weeks.
