Ponyskin

why waste the skin? They do use the hides and ponies are imported for their skins (they cost so little!) The coloured and spotties are the most requested. The ponies are bought for very little in the various markets in England (nearer the Channel) by the French dealers. They are then sold on (via France) to the Dutch dealers who sell them by weight to the Italians. Here in Italy, you don't buy 15 ponies, you buy x hundredweight. I will rummage about on google and find the link for one of the factories who 'produce' pony skin. Ponyskin is the outer covering ripped off a little pony (or horse.)
heres a link for a horseskin jacket.

I know you can definitely buy the pony skin and horse leather in this country as a man down my yard is a leather worker/saddler and he says that he has bought it before (think London area). I am not 100% certain but I think he said it was Italian, so I assume there is no market for us to skin them here.

There was a thread on this a while ago;

Havent read it all, but general consensus is that is it mostly cow, however there is a trade using real pony skin.
and here is my reply...
sorry if I have upset you, but, I fail to see where i was 'rude'. I have no hang ups regarding the use of equine skins IF the equine was slaughtered at his point of origin. What I really cannot cope with, is the transporting of any equine (including ponies of very little meat value) for thousands of miles while still alive. There is no excuse for it and it would be better if 'ponyskins' were slaughtered and processed at home. There are over 200 factories who process ponyskin here in Italy, as far as I can make out, there are FOUR in GB!

Thanks for previous link--I should have ''searched'' first

Particularly interested if anyone sees items being sold in UK street markets etc

I have often told my spotted stallion that if he dies in winter I'll have him made into a rug. I am joking tho, but his coat is glorious!

Is it really any worse than getting a pet stuffed,(a bit creepy) or using cow leather? It's the dragging things halfway across Europe before slaughter that is more of an issue than use of the end products? (for want of a better phrase)

Ponyskin is also being considers as a replacement for sealskin in the manufacture of Sporrans.

Slaighter of seals is now very controlled so no longer an option.

I have no problem with it, same as horse slaughter and the consumption of horse meat. What I have a problem with is that they are transported live in poor conditions.
