Poo crisis on DIY yard

I have my own place so have to poo pick. I have 4 horses so it can take up to an hour a day but luckily my OH helps if he can. I must admit I didn't really factor in the time for this when we bought our own place. I was at a yard on full livery before and didn't need to do it. Have to say the fields there were not poo picked and were a bit of a mess and the horses got a bit wormy. I have about 6 acres and find I have to do it or we would lose a lot of grass. As others have said it is usually enjoyable as you spend time outside with the horses and can notice any other probs with fields. Good exercise too! Agree it's tricky on a yard where this is expected and getting everyone to do their share.

Oh ,my goodness. I hadn't realised so many people were so incredibly lazy around the proper care of their horses, and are so contemptuous of their YO's land.

IMO, poo picking from restricted grazing (as in not low stocked, vast fields) is a vital part of horse management.

If you can't be bothered to poo pick and are unwilling or unable, to properly compensate someone else for doing it. Don't have a horse.

Poo picking is easy if you are in good health, around during daylight, have level smooth fields and dont have undergrowth.

My three are in a field together, its not level and has trees and other bits where the tractor cant get in to top it. That means we have nettle and weed patches in places. This is where my three choose to poo, not on the grass they eat.

I cant manage a barrow in the field when it wet and even if I could its impossible to get poos out of long undergrowth.

I cant see the problem, except for well fertilised weeds :D

Yep - this is my set up. Love it, hassle free and its all managed by us!:)

Mine too!!! Just the 2 of us & 2 ponies & 1 horse. The farmer does include emptying the muck trailer & even suggested to cut our winter paddocks for hay which he arranged, cost £2 a bale to make :D. We pooh pick daily, it doesnt take long & keep yard swept & tidy. Love it, no politics or hassle :D:D

I agree. I've now got my own place but previously I've always looked after the fields like they were my own. Poo picked every day even when the other owners didn't and although it p*ssed me off, I still did it.

Princess P, no one on here has objected to Poo picking - some just attribute more importance to it than others.

What is clear on this thread though is the importance all posters (well apart from one) give to land management - however it's achieved.

I've been on several yards over the years, from huge full livery competition yards, to tiny DIY ones, and without fail, the fields have been poo picked daily, either by a team of pickers (80 acres plus done every day), or myself and other liveries.
It's one of the first questions I ask when looking at a new yard, and is part of basic horse management, IMO.
Surely it just makes sense to keep your pastures healthy, and thus help your horse stay healthy.

The girl I shared a field with has just been "removed" from the yard as she didnt poo pick.... Ever! Get tough or charge them appropriately! 3 barrows a week is by no means a hard feat, they sound very lazy!!
