I have three horses on DIY, two of them are a mare and foal (not yet weaned). This winter I have been struggling to find time to poo-pick the mare and foal every week - I work long hours and am often not there in the daylight.

In my yard contract it does say that if the field is not muckpicked you will be charged £10/week for the YO/staff to do it, which is fair enough, however, a lot of th owners don't seem to do any so the rule is not upheld.

As I was struggling, I asked YO if I could pay her £10/week to do it to help me out, to which she agreed. Anyway, 8 weeks and 80 pounds later we have worming day - I go all they way down the field and is FULL of poo. YO says her staff have been doing 2 barrows a week.

Would it be unfair of me to say that 2 barrows is not enough? That's a fiver a barrow?!

or am I being unreasonable and is this a fair rate for two barrows? bearing in mind that a lot of people just leave the poo.

(we are leaving this yard soon so I could just leave the field but no point in worming them if it's full of poo?

Thanks

With 3 horses on a field i would have thought 2 barrows a day was more like it. I know with 2 horses i would count on around 9 barrows a week - so they are not too heavy to push & mine are in at night.

Our yard charges £3 a time to poo pick, but that is for a whole fields worth, so could be a whole barrow or more.

TBH whatever they are charging you should cover ALL of the poo being removed. If thats not working because other owners arent doing their turn then this must be addressed.

Most fields here produce almost a barrow full a day so I would expect 5-7 barrows for a week. But that's between owners.
Sounds like the main issue is that not everyone is taking turns and they need to sort that out otherwise no point you either paying them ££££££ or doing it yourself!

good luck, know its awkward raising this stuff :-))

Two barrows a week is insufficient to keep a field clear with 3 horses in it. How long does it take to fill a barrow....... 15-20 minutes.. so 2 barrows around 40-45 minutes plus bringing it up from the field & emptying it. I suppose you are looking at £10 for an hour. The groom is paid & the YO makes a little

. When you work it out it is probably about right?
To keep the field thoroughly clear the entire time would cost you alot more.

Thanks guys

There are only two horses in the field - mare and foal and they are in at night (although this is recent).

My other mare is in a field on her own and in at night - I get two barrows a week from her although I think this is a little light - she poos more at night IMO!

Will have to tackle this with YO as I feel there's no point in me paying if it doesn't actually help.

When mine were on DIY and out 24h, I reckon we were on a small barrow, a horse, a day.
I could do about 5 barrows an hour if that helps?
