just come back from hols and whilst i was away had an heated discussion with folk who live in very rural area and have ggs passing their house everyday and pooing in road. Not pile but line. And they are soo... insensed about the fact that lady doesn't either pick up poo straight away or sorts out later. I've never thought that it could cos offense

cos it's what happens in countryside.
I pointed out that she probably doesn't know that these homeowners find it annoying, as it is on country lane and in rural location. Also how is she ment to clean up after gg whilst out on public highway???
They are talking about doing horrible things like turning hosepipe on etc... which i was sooo... shocked about. So i suggested that they go and chat to horse owner about their problem
BUT
What are you thoughts???
Has anyone else had this type of problem??
What would you do if asked to pick up your gg poo from public highway in rural location???

I hack through my village fairly often and can safely say have never picked up a poo off the road! It is a very small village, I know mostly everyone but still have never done it, and noone has ever complained!

If someone asked me, I probably would, but noone ever does so not really a problem!

there is no law to say that horse dung has to be lifted from a public highway .

So the lil lady can do nothing about it, and if she was to use the watering hose next time horsey and rider is out well on her own head be it . I just hope she can live with herself if something awful happens to horsey and rider .

Can't see it's any different to any other kind of 'muck' that gets on country roads. An issue if it affects safety - like muck from tractor tyres sometimes can, but otherwise, they should deffo shut up or get out.

I was once driving behind a woman (sorry)! driver in a new 4x4 who stopped on a reasonably wide road for no apparent reason, when the oncoming traffic had passed, to my amazement she then proceeded on the wrong side of the road to drive AROUND a pile of droppings to avoid soiling her lively, pristine tyres!

I've had a guy in a local village making 'pick it up!' signals at me from his car before - so I just made 'and how do you suggest I do that' signals back! I try and avaoid leaving any piles in the village but if they are going to do it there isn't much you can do! I've got my argument all ready for the day someone tries to tell me it's a danger to public health!

This happened to a friend of mine a few years ago - she was out on a hack and a woman who was in her garden got cross because my friend's horse pooed in front of her house so my friend said nicely that if she would provide a shovel and a plastic bag she would be happy to clear it up and take it home with her! The woman took her up on the offer but I think she regretted it when she had to hold friend's horse!

I would feel a bit bad if my horse did the toilet in the middle of a town, don't ride through towns so not a problem! I make Chex go on the verge if he's going to go, just feels a bit wrong doing it on the road! However I wouldn't go back and pick it up if he did!

If a horse poos outside my parents house my Dad is out there with a bucket to collect it so he can rot it down and put it on the garden. Horse poo is not like dog poo.

I think people should be a bit more chilled - as someone said, they should be fighting over who gets it for their roses not squabbling with riders! We only have one old bloke in the village who gets nasty when a horse poos outside his house, whether it's your horse's poo or not. But TBH dog poo is FAR more harmful and offensive and do dog owners round my way pick it up? Do they heck! I always have a stock of doggy bags on me when walking my JRT and hand them out to lazy irresponsible walkers on the way!

But heck, what's a bit of harmless horse poo when you're in the country??

WELL, I agree with everyone here. How on earth do you get off and move it?? Its dangerous enough riding on ANY road no matter how quiet thesedays, nevermind getting off to move a poo!! Quite ridiculous!

When I was younger I used to help at a riding school in the middle of a town and we used to have to go clean the road up after the ride came back.

We also got phoned up by the local council in Bath as someone had complained about poo on the road, but refused to clear it up as it was about 2 miles away from us and there were 5 livery yards closer - told them to go talk to the yard actually on the road.

This happend to me last year...i was hacking along nice and calmly when a woman came launching out of her door...shouting you on the horse!...i stopped to be greeted with a barage of insults about horsey people letting their horses poo wherever they like....now im sorry but i havent toilet trained my ned have you...lol...which is what i told the woman when i could get a word in...lol...I wouldnt mind but it was the first time id been down this road so i was copping the flack for previous riders....her neighbour came out and winked at me...then said if you dont want it..i will....lol..and proceeded to pick it and throw it on his garden...lol...the woman insensed by her firendly neighbour...lol....turned away and slammed her door behind her...lmao....

It takes allsorts to make the world go round...but in the ops post, if the person got a hose to the horse and caused an accident they would be legally to blame and could be arrested..i hope they know that!

How ridiculous, have they ever noticed how quickly horse muck disapears once it has been deposited. The only reason there are laws relating to dog fouling is beacause there are health risks associated with dog muck. To my Knowlege there is no health risk connected to health regards to horse manure (apart from my back when I muck out!)

However this sort of attitude doesnt surprise me at all. I work as an EHO in polution control and it never ceases to amaze me how pernickety and pathetic some people can be.

Completely agree. Dog poo is horrible and dangerous to human health and should be picked up and disposed of properly but horses are not meat eaters and their poo does not carry the same risk. I find it so strange that people choose to live in the countryside if they are frightened of a bit of "muck". My cottage is in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by fields on all sides but I can't imagine myself getting all precious about someone's horse pooing on the lane outside. It reminds me of one of my city dwelling step-daughters who looked at me in amazement when I took her to an ODE becase she didn't realise that you could walk on "fields"! Made me chuckle.

our yard is on a main road right next to a posh a la carte restaurant..so if the neds poo outside that regardless of whether its on the road or the path (young uns ride along the path as road is mental ) we pick it up..anywhere else it gets left where it is unless its on the path, then it gets kicked into the road!! there is one old biddy who lives local and walks her dog who complains about the droppings in the road but ive yet to come across her...
