watched this yesterday and was struck on the fact that the groomers werent using round ended scissors when they were trimming the dogs faces and eyebrows, especially when they were trimming the puppies. who were all remarkably well behaved incidentally. I thought it was the run of the mill thing to use them on animals, always used on my horses

Hmm, last night was interesting. hand stripping, now everything I've researched (having a border terrier who needs hand stripping) says you shouldnt bath before a hand strip and all the groomers who specialise in hand stripping refuse to bath before or after due to the risk of infection getting into the open pores. Some of them were quite rough with it too.

MIL has borders and we used to as well. I'd never handstrip now, like I stopped pulling horses manes. I have got soft as I got older. I decline leg waxes myself, why inflict them on an animal?
When we did hand strip we used to do it gradually, on a warm day, after a walk when the hair was coming out anyway. I know groomers do a better job of it but it is with a time constraint.
They look fine clipped, no its not as smart but they are pets.

And PL I absolutely know that your post had nothing about hand stripping. I admit I'm not watching this programme, I'd rather poke my eyeballs with toothpicks, but I am surprised to hear they don't use safe scissors.

I was interested in the 'guess the breeds' with the crossbreeds. I got the pug x cairn right as soon as it walked in, was amazed she didn't, having suggested cairn as a possible cross she went for something else.

I thought it could be to do with covid protocol at the moment. We are meant to bath everything first and not do any rough clips or anything with the dog til it’s washed.

But Colin Taylor has been on one of the grooming groups this morning and addressed this concern. He said that the only reason to handstrip before bathing is to make it easier to get hold of the hair as it’s dirty.

I was taught to use bull nosed scissors for doing under eyes and across nose but other scissors for every where else on head and face.
