Hello,
My rising 6YO coloured has a very dirty bottom and back legs. He is fed Balanced Horse Feeds Riding Horse Mix I 1/2 scoop 2 times a day and 1 scoop chaff with it and pink powder. He is fed hayledge and also turned out during the day.
All his poos has solid in the stable and he get a little runny out hacking, but nothing awful. Its basically when he farts liquid poo comes out and dribbles down his legs.
Is there anything I can give him to make has tummy a little happier, and maybe give his back legs a chance of staying whiteish?!

Also posted in Stable Yard, but I thought here may have some useful ideas also!!

My only suggestion would be replacing the haylege for some good quality hay , it may dry him up a bit , i'm guessing he's got access to good grass during the day / night and then in the other half day/night is in with a net? Ours have solid poos but sometimes they are quite green and cow patty , we now give them a small amount of hay each day ( 1 cake literally between 2 ) and it seems to solid them up a bit.

Miss Bird - how much yoghurt do you give in your horse's feed? My lad has the same problem because of the haylage. I've put him on hay now, but I like the idea of adding some pro and pre-biotics into his gut.

OP, have you tried haylage balancer? I also agree with the poster who has suggested finding some hay, if you don't want to (or can't afford to ) feed all hay, even mixing it in with the haylage should help.

Hay is a good idea, but I get haylege with my livery, and storing it may be an issue!

I have not tried and haylege balancer, but I will ask my local feed merchants and I would be interested to know how much yogurt is added to feed!! thank you for all suggestions!!

I start her off with 5 teaspoons/2 tablespoons in breakfast makes a real difference, overthe course of a few days it gradually up it to about 5 tablespoons a day.
Do this for 2 weeks and had no problems, each time we have a season change or different haylage she gets dreadful runs, tried all the horse stuff then went back to natural youghurt, been using that for about 4 years now and the first sign off to tesco for their cheap own brand stuff.
At the end of the day it is doing what it says on the pot.

Editted to say depending on size of horse and how bad runs are try with the 5 teaspoons/2 tablespoons for a few days then add a bit more as needed, it will take a couple of days to start working but always clears my mare up and she has the worst tummy trouble in the world

Thats amazing, thank you so much! I will pop out and buy some tonight and let you know how we get on!!

my boy went like this last summer, i just got him naf biotics and within the 10days it lasts for he was all cleared up. Also try giving him either some hay/straw with the haylage to try and soak up some moisture!!
Also agree with the yoghurt we give our boy that too and also give it to the dog! The dog gets half a tub per day (tesco value probiotic/natural yoghurt) when she is bad. the horse tends to have a tub for about 4days. we dont measure just splodge it in :p
