Hi all,

Just after everyones thoughts / experiences with hives. autumn had two episodes last summer which we put down to a change in shampoo, stopped using it and it went away.

the past three days she has come up in masive lumps (some mingling together to form larger areas of swelling) which are warm to touch and shes a bit scratchy and grumpy. they are much bigger than those she had over the summer.

thing is i cant think of ANYTHING that has changed. not used any new products either on her or her kit (well i washed the grooming kit the other week but that will be nearly two weeks ago on wednesday) shes simply fed hifi and a mix of hay and haylage.

so, what to do? and when would you think about getting the vet out?

Similar thing happened with my mare, no change to feed, etc. My vet reckoned she was allergic to either her bedding or a substance used on the bedding and it all cleared up within a week of the bedding being changed.

yes, she gets carrots with her tea (if you can call it a tea, more of a gesture really!) these are the big orange net type carrots and they always come from the same shop.

bedding hasnt changed or anything either?

It doesn't matter where the carrots come from :) Some horses cannot tolerate them and I have a friend whose horse comes out in lumps when she eats them. Horses can grow into intolerances over time, try stopping the carrots. If you are buying them by the sackful, then she may have become sensitive to them.
