Does anyone else have such wimpy horses as I do ? :p

L is already in a MW & LW stable rug (no necks) and was COLD last night

B (hunter clipped) was in his sherpa with his MW-HW half neck and guess what....he was COLD last night

Out come the heavies for tonight I think :o well, for B anyway, I might get Lord a nice lycra hood to see if that helps keep him warm.

B is out today in his HW turnout & sherpa, poor iccle sausage. Temp was just right before anyone goes off on one as I checked BOTH horses at lunch ;) :D

SO who else has wimps that are being rugged up ???

ooh which sherpa do you have? i had the no neck and it rubbed my poor horses mane out in 3 days :(
now she' doens't have anything to cover her belly but i swear it made a difference to her warmth last year to have a warm tummy.... so any other recommendations oh rugging-up guru?? :D

no i've only tried the no neck version - maybe i shoud try a full neck one....
the other problem i had was the tail flap = had to cut it off as HRH peeed all over it! doh!!

Yep :D
B is in his 400g stable rug at night already, and 200g during the day, but with colder weather on the way that'll be 300g soon! Feel like a right outcast round here, though... :p

Mine is in his HW Red/Silver Rambo today, and he's fine it in, and not too warm at all. He'd be cold in his MW, unless I put a fleece underneath, but tbh I would rather put something like his red/siler on alone, as it is breathable and completely non restrictive.

I can and will layer up as neccessary when it gets even colder.

Yes... although I have also clipped mine :) Last night mine was in a half neck stable rug weight wise prop bit more than medium but not a heavy heavy weight and one of those lycra neck and face hoods. Mine gets heat spots if too warm so can't over rug and I wouldn't say she was cosy cosy last night in what she had :(

It was chilly lastnight & mine are still out, but I have just been out and removed my unclipped quite hairy TB's MW as it's warm in the sunshine. Trace clipped pony has kept hers on.

Both wore MW's lastnight & hairy Sec B was naked. There was a frost on the cars this morning.

Mines a rather fluffy connemara whos wearing a MW at the moment. Although i havent seen her since im broken. But when im a bit better she is getting clipped then i will re assess the situation :)

Im glad others are rugging up, i was starting to feel like i was being mean!! Haha.

oh and to add to the rugging list - mine is in a full neck 300gm at the mo - and she's unclipped  ;) (but due soon)

i've just ordered her a PE full neck HW turn out as i have the trio but think the wind gets in between the neck and the body :o so she's having the combo for colder weather...

when really cold and hunter clipped she'll have that - and a full neck duvet under rug - and a fleece - but she does live out 24/7 365 ;)

Mine are out 24/7 and were all last winter. The 'tank' was hunter clipped last week and has been in her m/w standard since. She seems happy and warm enough at night, but a l/w doesn't seem to be enoguh during the day, so she keeps m/w on all the time atm. Although if the temp keeps dropping the way it is I'll be considering adding a neck cover at night, as I don't really want to resort to h/w this early :)

Her mum hasn't been clipped yet and is quite happy naked, as is the anglo arab gelding, amazingly enough, even though his coat is thinner! And the *****land got a hunter clip today, so he has his boett on (as ever) with his l/w over the top til tonight, when he'll swap tp a m/w.

Phew! What a nightmare! This time last year it was warm, they were unclipped til mid November (later than I planned) very wooly but weather was much warmer and they did get a bit sweaty occasionally just standing in the field! What a difference.

I really wanted to get the last one done over the next two days, but no time to collect sharpened blades til next week, and I can't see the ones I've got in use lasting through THAT coat lol!!!!!!

My gelding is in a LW-MW with a MW neck at the mo, probably a MW in ther next few days if it doesn't get warmer. I've only had him 7 weeks and he is such a big girl! She did warn me he likes warm stables and food in the winter haha
My other 2 are naked.

Eep! You think it does? I've got the trio... maybe should get a combo instead... love the rug, though!

*disclaimer* yes she's spoilt and yes i pamper her and i know she wont die of some wet/rain but hey-ho its how i like to maange my horse :p*

ok now i've said ^^ that ;)

i love the trio for changing seasons and love the neck covers etc but i have noticed the wind and rain can get in between the hood/rug and as she lives out 24/7 i'd rather a combo - esp as she'll have a full neck duvet under it in colder weather when she's fully clipped - i'd not want that to get wet :)

Veteran girlie in 250g with neck in day and 300g standard at night, unclipped.
Cob gelding in most of the time, cooler in the day, 150g with neck at night and 200g if goes out for afew hours :D unclipped
Its freezing at night here now :-( but due to warm up again from tomorrow with easterly winds so may go lighter again then...

Ok this isnt a dig- if they are cold they obviously rug em- but, really seriously what are you going to do in Dec when its -10 or whatever?

Also what did we all do before the invention of necks/belly warmers/hoods etc? Did all horses seriously just freeze?

Mine's had his medium quilt on under his medium t/o with neck for a couple of nights this week, he's been wearing either a sheet or a medium t/o during the day for the weeks now, and last night he was in with a medium stable rug on.

I've just invested in a Mark Todd 350 t/o with gussetted neck which hopefully will keep him toasty warm without too many heavy layers.

He can cope with the cold but rain and wind can and does make him colic.:(

Hmm, I've been eyeing up that gap between the neck and the rug... B hasn't wintered out in that rug yet, so I wasn't sure how it would be. He's in at night, but has already had rainscald once this year (rain somehow managed to get under his tail flap??!) so I'm being a bit careful with rugging... may have to look at getting a full neck rain sheet to go over the top, or a HW combo for horrid days!

Ta :)

As Posie honey said I don't think you are on the right thread here... "do not read if offended by rugging"

please just let us people who like to rug our horses discuss it.

I'm sure they didn't freeze but i'm sure alot more dear I say "old school tactics" were employed like duvets, wool rugs/blackets and jute rugs

When it reaches -10 etc I shall add another leightweight sheet or a duvet, bandage the horse up and add warm fibre beet into their feed.

Before the invention of neck rugs etc we had whitney blankets to partially cover the horses neck and keep the heat in.

Nope horses do not freeze but my bank balance would should I let my horse get too cold and get ill.....I learnt that the hard way with B and I nearly lost him to pnumonia as a result.

Actually Im not offended by rugging- like I said if you had cared to read my actual post " if they are cold rug em"- and as this is an open forum I fear I have the right to comment on whatever thread I chose, without being told to "please just let us people who like to rug our horses discuss it.":cool:

Which is actually an odd turn of phrase- you LIKE to rug your horse, surely you only rug as and when they need it?

Anyhoo I was merely wondering about the practicalities, and also wondering if the older school methods like the ones you describe, which is what I was thinking were actually more effective than all the new fangled hoods, HW's etc as obviously layering is known to be warmer.

I remember buying blankets/duvets from our local charity shop for mine, but they always had them folded back, never wore necks etc. How times change :D

I'm being mean! My big boy us out in just his own coat and fat! He is on the fat side of things and it's actually quite warm where the yard is, but he's is getting clipped on Sunday and will be wrapped up after that!

Just started driving again so only allowed to drive once a day and not far at all :( but as of Sunday I don't care a week is slow enough as far as I'm concerned!!!

Can't wait to look after my boy properly again :)

My big pansy who is only blanket clipped is in his masta medium weight (220g) already. It was only 3 degrees here this morning though so am thinking of going up to the HW. He feels the cold. When he was still out this summer I got up there one afternoon that it had been raining(must have been 15+ degrees though) and he was shaking like a leaf! He is a wimp, you wouldn't think it to look at him either the big lump!

FWIW I am cold with two jumpers and a fleece on at the moment as the weather has changed rather quickly. I will acclimatise as will many of the horses but in the mean time no point letting them be cold hey? When it is minus 10 he will be more used to it I would hope and will survive with his HW and a lightweight liner underneath.
