Poor beasties ......Do not read if offended by rugging

iv had horses in 5/6 rugs at a time and trust me they can still roll, leap,gallop, graze, sleep, eat and ***** like any other horse :)

"Yeah sometimes people see it as some sort of Triumph that their horse isnt rugged and show off about it!!! and you see their horse in the field looking thoroughly Pi**ed off, cold,wet and miserable its not a sign of weakness to put a rug on!!!!!! "

the above also drives me mad, he's fine in his LW says the person whose horse looks ribby and tucked up with a dry dull coat!aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...... mine come in from the field and even on a horrid wet cold day they are round and cheerfull, coats gleaming,prancing along with their ears up-makes me so sad to see poor little sods in fields, looking damp and tired and fed up with life, for the sake of a neck cover or under rug.

OOhh I am not in that categorie, my horses are growing thick winter coats, they aren't rugged up yet, they are warm and fat and are not tucked up looking miserable or anything. In fact they look great, still living out 24/7
 
You know what? I have transcended the two schools of thought...

I don't care what my horse thinks. If I THINK they are cold, they will wear the WamboWug much thicker than my chilly-weather duvet. I don't actually care if they have coats as thick as my carpet. All that matters is what I think. After all, it' my money. So there.

Oh what it is to be 30 and so sure about your self :p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p

p.s. apart from fridays because I always get stuck on the motorway and by the time I get home all I want to do is drink a bottle of chauvignon til I puke.

yup Kias in a 450g at the mo (its minus here at night at the mo tho) and living out as he was in a 260g combo and he was a little cooler than I would ahve liked in the mornings when I checked him.

Eowyns got a half blanket at the mo and shes in a 200g indoor stable but shes ill at the mo and I have to keep her as warm and comfrotable as possible.

Does anyone have the new rambo rug, the one that is meant to give with the horse without rubbing or causing restrictions? I think its in the £270+ Bracket.

What are you thoughts on it? I don't need a new rug for either my lads.

Old boy has a 9yr old Rambo Plus that has a nail sized tear in it but been repaired and the young un has a Rambo Duo. But those new rugs look great, then I think if I buy one they will bring something out even better next year and I'll want that as well :D

My first post! Not being in the horse scene for long im finding it difficult to decide what to put my lad in. He is a heavy cobby type so during the day he is naked, and of a night time he is in a lw turnout.

The weather here in exeter the last few days has been confusing, cold and frosty by night, but t shirt weather by day!:confused:

I am under the watchful eye of my friends on the same yard and i am assured that I am doing right by my boy.:)

actually - i beg to differ ;)

a horses moulting and coat growth are - yes- mostly dependant upon daylight hours

however - coat length and thickness isn't totally dependant upon that - it is also dependant upon warmth

i have a case study on this actually :cool: this is m my 3rd winter owning my mare (living out 24/7) The first winter she looked like a *****land and i used less rugs to keep her warm - but with careful rug management each year she growns less winter coat (and no that's not outside temp dependant either - considering up here last winter we had weeks where it did not even get up to 0'C ::))

its a management choice i make to condition my horse to need rugs and grown less winter coat as she's a devil to clip so keep us both happier :)
 
Im always quite shocked to read about what people are rugging horses in tbh, but im not going to have a breakdown about it. What i will say is my rugging habits changed quite a lot when i moved my horses home 12 years ago.
I now use far less rugs (& i have a huge stock of rugs as im a closet rugaholic), this is mainly due to the fact i can check them far more than when they where in livery i also have camera's in there stables & it's easy to spot when there a little to warm as there habit's change.
My 25yo TB runs hot he is sometimes wearing a LW & sometimes not being rugged at all atm, he's out today rugless. Would also like to point out he's actually porky atm & has a mega shinny coat not tucked up or miserable. In fact my vet has been commenting on his condition just yesterday.

I would also say that horses do warm up very quickly when there eating so i think some of you may be getting false readings from your horses at times.

My fully clipped coblet is in 300g with 100g neck stable rug. 200g MW high neck t/o. She's warm to touch, bordering toasty... And no, even though she's a bit of a chubster I do not feel bad about rugging her up as she does feel the cold and is positively grumpy if she's not warm enough...
 
Ooh what a mixture! I'm somewhere in the middle I think. Couple of nights ago we went sub-zero here so boys were in the most rugs they ever wear. Clipped out Arab was in a mw under rug and hw stable, unclipped (but fine coated) youngster just the hw stable.
I don't care what month it is I go by temps:
Below 5 degrees - arab has hw stable + underrug and night, hw t/o in day, youngster hw stable and hw t/o
5-10 HWs day and night
If it gets over 10 during day youngster has his MW but now J is fully clipped out he will stay in HW during day unless it gets unseasonably warm!!
 
all over the place with rugging at the moment. Mine are both stabled in a barn so have a little less than those on the main yard but unclippped TB x is in a 300 gram stable rug and 200 grm outdoor - both with necks. Clipped out TB x ID is in a 360 outdoor and a 450 with sheet stable as of last night - again with necks.

But last Sunday - travelled to a clinic in a heavy fleece and thermatex (plus neck) as was freezing. He came home naked!

Seriously though yes, if base of ears are cold and her face hair is all stood on end, obviously she is cold. IMO.

Obviously, I was not precise enough for everyone when I said "ears" in a previous post,naturally I meant the base of the ears! the winter coat grows because of the change in daylight hours regardless of how quickly it gets cold, so, if it's minus five, and your horse has not grown it's winter coat, rugging is the sensible option, my horse, as a totally man made breed, gets cold tucked up and bad tempered very easily, whats the point in chucking food into a horse thats cold, If she is cold I rug her, if she's not cold I don't, nothing simpler!
