I have a TB X ID. In the last 4 weeks the weight seems to have dropped off of him. I think this is due to prolonged harsh winter and him having used up his reesrves! He is happy and energetic otherwise. I have doubled his feed intake across his 2 meal times for the past week and a half. He is on 16 + conditioning mix with chaff and soya oil + ad lib hay. The weight seems to be slowly coming back on but can anyone suggest any other feeds that might fatten him up?! I hate seeing him look underweight.

Yes, just found this:

700gm NAF Pink Powder Horse Supplement
The stress of prolonged travelling, changes of stabling and changes in feeds are well known for having debilitating effects on the equine digestive system. These stress situations are often responsible for a lowering of performance due to gastro-intestinal disturbance. Additionally injury, pregnancy and anti-biotic treatment have a detrimental effect on the micro-organisms in the intestinal tract which are responsible for the break down of ingested food which in turn is assimilated and used by the repair mechanisms to provide energy. A blend of probiotics, yeast, vitamins and minerals to "kick-start" the digestive system. However, NAF does not usually recommend the long term use of Pink Powder as the horse may become reliant on it. It is more effective when used as a short term "pick me up". - Please note that 700g lasts 30 Days. - Suitable for stress, digestive upset, to improve weight gain

Ah brilliant, thank you for that. Will go out and get some tomorrow. Horrible to see him looking scrawny, looks like I haven't been feeding him!

Sugar beet is great for weight gain, you can even get Quickbeet which only has to soak for 10 mins instead of 24hrs. It's from Dodson and horrell horse feeds, you can even ring them for some free feed advice. If you want to go the whole hog you can order a pack from them for £10 for a full feed evaluation and condition of your horse, they will even do hay samples free of charge so you know exactly what your hore is eating and what he is missing out on.......all for a £10!!!!
Sorry telling everone as i just had my horses done! and an hay analisis alone can be up to £50
Hope this helps x

Does he have hay throughout the day?

Do you have the opportunity of introducing a third or fourth feed, rather than increasing his current two?

Is his worming up to date?

Do his teath need doing??

Is he warm enough?

Has anything changed in his routine?

We haven't had a harsh winter at all.....

D&H feeds also contain probiotics, vits and mins in most of there standard feeds including nuts so you don't have to by seperate supplements!

I'm not sure about D&H - we're just trying them instead of Spillers as I can join a bulk order scheme locally to bring the price down. Their 16+ mix is very coarse and my old lad reckons it's not as nice as Spillers Senior Conditioning Mix and the 16+ cubes aren't as good as Spillers, or even Baileys Topline Cubes. The Safe and Sound mix for laminitics (which is not approved by the Laminitis Trust) has globs of sticky molassed chaff and my lot prefer Speedibeet to Kwikbeet, though both are unmolassed.

The jury's out as we're still in the early days with D&H but I'm not really impressed TBH.

Thumbs up for Pink Powder though, £13.99 a tub here and well worth it.

what chaff his he on try alfa a oil brill stuff a pre biotic will help him digest and get the most out of his feed what about maybe sugar beet or alfa beet!
