I've just taken my Border Terrier to the RVC, we got a referal this morning and had to go straight there. She seems to have slipped a disk in her lumbar vertebrae but she's gone from painful and slightly wobbly to very reduced feeling and paralysis in her hind legs.

The vet seemed to think she has a reasonable chance of recovery if they can get the pressure off her spinal chord and she's going for a myogram this afternoon to see if it is a disc, inflammation or tumor. She might be operated on this afternoon.

Poor thing has gone from fine to unable to stand in 2 days. She tried to pee last night but couldn't stand the way she needed to without yelping and giving up.

Has anyone had experience of anything similar?

Not my own experience, but I used to do pet fostering and fostered two pekingese dogs for a woman whose dachshund (SP?) had slipped a disc and was recovering (so other dogs had to live with me for 6 weeks.)

The dog was fine in the end, he initially had paralysis but the surgery was successful and although it too a fair while for him to be fully back on his feet and not wobbly, he did make an amazing recovery. Only prob was that he wasn't allowed to do stairs ever again (which is how he slipped the disc in the first place.)

((((hugs)))) to your doggie - Hope he makes a full recovery.

She had a myogram which showed it to be her disc and they took her straight into surgery. The vet just called and told me there was a lot of blood as the disc had ruptured a vessel and the spinal chord 'didn't look too happy' as it was a bit bruised but he said recovery is about 60-70% which I suppose is relatively positive.

She's just coming round now and they put a catheter in so i'm sure she won't be the happiest of bunnies but it sounds like she's in good hands, or atleast I feel happier about her being there. She'd better be comfortable there as it could be up to a week but we'll try to go there at the weekend if we can.

i went to uni there - she's definitely in good hands

Hope your girl makes a good recovery. Can I ask how the myogram went? My dog has to have one later this month and I've been told that the human version is pretty horrible. A person who had it said that she had to stay upright for 2 days and had the worst headache of her life for a week.

I'm not sure to be honest. They literally did the myogram and took her straight into theatre to remove the disk. So I don't think any effects would be distinguishable from the post-op ones.

We popped up there to see her today and they wheeled her out on a trolley. She was sitting there like a right little madam...and it seems her every whim is being pandered too (including fuss on demand and hand feeding!). She looks ok, the vets seem positive but there was no obvious movement in her hind legs. She has a wound about 5 inches long over her spine where they opened her up but its looking nice and clean.

They've told us to get ready for her return around the end of next week, with an extensive physio programme and hydrotherapy if we can sort it out. Spinal injuries can go both ways though I guess.

Can't help with problem, but do have a border terrier and if yours is like ours a total wimp, the RVC are very good and I hope all goes well and she is on the mend soon.
