Many shod horses have a wall infection that causes the foot to crumble and crack - it gets in through the nail holes. There's a couple of disinfectants on the market but Cleantrax is one of the most efficient. This EP shop sells it, and similar stuff.

If she keeps loosing shoes anyways have a think about taking her shoes off for a couple of months and riding in boots. It'll give the foot and chance to recover and improve, the nail holes to grow out and a set of boots costs less than two shoeings. Esp if she keeps loosing shoes!

Topsepc balancer was fab with my old horse who had crumbly feed when I got him. His feet looked fantastic, and you could see the difference in the new growth. Combine it with Alfa if possible as it has good levels of Calcium and protein

Cheap and simple.....

Eucalyptus oil, my farrier recommended it to me about two months ago now and it's wonderful stuff. Her clenches used to rise dramatically 10days after shoeing, now they stay nice and tight. The crack in her one foot (a legacy from a cavity she had behind the toe clip one year ago) has gone totally as the oil binds the hoof and meant the crack stopped spreading at the same rate as the hoof grew. Any cracks or splits no longer spread, and the hoof is wonderfully strong and flexible, something my farrier commented on the last time he shod her.

Also feed TopSpec balancer but this is only since august so definitely not the reason the hoof is better as won't have grown much since then.

And use Kevin Bacon dressing but have done this for a year now and the dramatic improvement is since the eucalyptus oil - get it off ebay, a lot cheaper than boots!

never heard of using eucalyptus oil. Do you mix it with a carrier oil to use all over or just dab where its needed? If that makes sense

Just dab it on where needed... the bottle's got a built in dropper so I just kind of wipe the top of the bottle over problem areas.

I'd never heard of it either (nor anyone else I've mentioned it to!) but I swear by the stuff now. It's just regular aromatherapy oil, undiluted. Apparently it's one of those old-fashioned remedies but I think it's amazing stuff, have seen my girls feet stay looking so good after they're shod right up until the next shoeing (she once lost three shoes in a week when the farrier was late coming)

Last time he came he cut a lot off and then demonstrated how good and flexible the hoof was by bending the crescent shaped off cut and saying normally it'd break if I did this and hers just flexed which I guess is why the cracks are now growing out an not worsening.

Amazing stuff, I can't rate it enough as you've probably guessed!

the only thing that worked on my tbs feet was global herbs supahoof - even my farrier mentioned the improvement and he is Mr supplements don't work your horse is doomed to have crap feet forever so deal with it 2009

My previous farrier and new farrier has said anything with biotin in is good, have been using a biotin powder and nettex hoof stuff (sorry cant remember what its called at mo) and new farrier said my TB had great feet for a TB.

I swear by Kevin Bacon hoof dressing - great for maintaining good hoof condition...and I use stockholm tar if feet get at all smelly or get any holes etc that need to be kept clean..

Gelatine from the supermarket (non vegetarian stuff). One sachet a week in feed. Seaweed is good and Mag Ox.

I would be wary of feeding Gelatine- its an animal product and horses are vegetarians?

Since feeding black sunflower seeds, my horses has never had such fast growing and tough feet. They don't wear shoes and rarely get any chips or splits and my farrier really had to work hard to trim them. They get a mug a day. Also gives a lovely shiney coat.

Like all supplements they take about 6 - 9 months to really see the results on the feet, but the coat looks shiney and feels very soft after a month.
