Poor Horse.

I can only assume that is someone's idea of a joke. The riding between fences isn't bad enough to warrant what happens in the air surely?

I'm not sure that is a joke, at the end when it refuses (because of the riders god damn awful riding) he waits ages then wacks it on the bum with the whip! Which IMO was uncalled for and way past the point of the horse understanding what it was for. If it was a joke, not very funny imo.

WOW!!!

I guess some people just can't sit a jump. I guess in theory even a not very good rider (well jumper) can with money, buy a good honest horse and jump big courses. Pity the horses though

ETA That was not aimed at above picture, that was aimed at original video :D The WOW comment was though!!

This is Jeff McVean (one of Australia's top SJ riders for many years!) after he came back from England telling us he'd CURED himself of 'flying' (note the straps holding his stirrup leathers to the girth!)

Jeff.jpg

Jeff was an outstanding horseman and produced HUNDREDS of good horses from scratch during his career! But he followed in the footsteps of Kevin Bacon (all of us around at the time tried to ape him!) He was the best speed rider I ever saw - he was also a triple Olympian and is now a successful racehorse trainer in NZ - with his 22 year old daughter following in Dad's showjumping footsteps!

It was relatively late in his career when people started buying him horses - he earned his living buying and producing from scratch!

I don't think for a moment that the rider in this clip is within a million miles of Jeff's abilities - but look back in history and you'll find a number of very successful riders who adopted this 'style' over a fence.

Annette Lewis - with Tutein - in the 1980s is one who springs to mind!

damned uncomfortable for the horse though..and by the way us knee gripping sorts do not leave the vicinity of the saddle, our velcro knees prevent that very well!

oh my god thats awful! it doesnt look like a joke to me! not amused, think he needs some lessons instead of entering comps!!

Horrible :( don't care if it was the done thing years ago, the horse is worse off and it's just asking for back problems.

This was in the related vids next to it I think. The horses son maybe?

How dare you post a picture of me without asking me first

:p

Kokopelli, I think the video turned out to be of a swap which happened when polo players swapped with showjumpers - shouldn't have been at the expense of the horse though :(

You'd think they would make the jumps smaller so the rider doesn't get launched like that. Such a shame that horse had a nice pop in him and was very genuine to put up with that

It wasn't 'the done thing' necessarily - some riders did it to suit the horses they rode. Jeff's Claret was TINY (about 14.3) and she jumped very successfully in Oz for years before coming to UK and taking out the King George Cup - she then went on to Zoe Bates! No sign of a bad back!

But of course the people who did it well did NOT crash back into the saddle - they caught the saddle with their knees and kept bums out of saddle.

Kevin Bacon's Chichester was in the Australian Olympic Team in 1968 - and again - 8 years later - in 1976! And his back was good enough after that to run Idle Dice a VERY close second at Madison Square Gardens.

You wouldn't set out to TEACH a SJ rider that style - but numerous riders were successful at the highest level using it (how many 7' walls have YOU jumped?)

Joke, dare, bet .... whatever it may have been the way he used that whip was totally unacceptable, shame, what a lovely little horse a real trier.

Think I've seen this (and similar vids before) thankfully style doesn't
count in showjumping (or I'd have been out years ago ;) ) getting over the fence is all important (provided its not to the detriment of the horse) and long may it remain that way :)
