I feel so sorry for my mare. Bought her 3 months ago. And she's been fairly insane ever since to ride. Had her teeth done today. And dentist said thy were bloody awful. And she must've been in pain. Was assured by previous owner ahe was very recently seen. So never thought. She was seen today as we are very remote and dentist only visits once or twice a year. I feel annoyed that someone has been telling me porkies. I mean. I'd rather know she's not been done in ages. Makes me wonder what other little lies she spun me. Grrr. Sorry. Rant over
 
Having bought so many horses over the years I'm often surprised at how much buyers believe. I have to say I take a sellers comments with a huge big dose of skepticism.

Glad your mare has been seen to now and hopefully she'll feel much better.
 
This one clearly is. Whole bloody set up seemed so pleasant. Really lovely yard. Ladela. Hmph. On a better note. She's a sweet mare. Had a bit of a bad past I think. She really didn't strike me as dodgy.
 
Sorry but I don't necessarily think the seller was lying at all. The horse may well have been seen by a dentist - doesn't mean it was a good one! Also, I am sorry but I don't think I've met one dentist yet who hasn't come and said how god awful a horse's teeth are and then sl*gged off another dentist's work. It's very easy for them - most of us horse owners are not teeth experts so who are we to argue? Makes us just think how fantastic 'our' horse dentist must be. You get a different dentist in 6 mths - what's the betting they'll say the horse has never had it's teeth done properly?

Sorry, maybe I am just a bit cynical.....!!! :)
 
I sold a mare and the buyers said their vet said teeth were terrible, she'd been seen by the dentist not that long previously. Also how old is your mare? Young horses need doing every six months or so I have found as teeth get sharp very quickly. Also some older ones do too.
 
^^this^^ I bought a horse a couple of years ago and spoke to the vrt who had done his teeth the week before. My dentist came out a week later and needed to do alot of work. The difference in his way of going and the consistency of his contact were remarkable so not just "professional bitching" either.

Although it is likely you were lied to, it's also just as likely you weren't. The vet came out to do my horse as they were appalling, however I wasn't there as he's on part livery so I didn't know what they did, how long they spent on him etc. He was still having trouble with the bit and although I know it could have been a range of issues I got a specialist dentist out who said he still had a few sharp edges and the vet hadn't rasped enough off. This was only 2 weeks later so perhaps they just didn't do a good job on your mare :(
 
Who knows. Am just glad she's sorted. I do actually like prev owner. She seems much more settled now. Will see how she rides tmo!
 
Must admit I agree with poster who had the vet out to do horse, as I did this once, she did 3 horses and they not happy in their mouths after that, so got my old horse dentist back 2 weeks later and he did a proper job on all 3. The only reason I went to vet, because I got fed up trying to organise several horses to make it worth his while coming to my area.
 
I had a similar experience with my mare a few years back. The dentist came out with her partner for the first check up after I got her, partner calls dentist to have a look.

Her mouth was in a right mess - bruising at the back of her mouth where she'd bitten it ( you've done it yourself, I'm sure, bite the inside of your cheek, it swells up so you bite it again, it swells...), hooks on every tooth and one worn down to the gum. :(

I was appalled - I was only a few weeks overdue with the check up, but the dentist reassured me that her mouth had been wrong for some considerable time, ie bad dentistry. Try not to blame the previous owner - we should be able to trust the professionals.
 
I trust said dentist completely. Who knows. Main thing is she's sorted now. She's 12. Our 2 yr old shetland had bad teeth too. He did a good job today. 3 happy horses

I'm with a dentist who I'd trust with my life now. I liked the other person who sorted out my mare, but this guy's sister's on our yard so I thought I'd give him a go and he's fab!

We weren't sure if my current horse had ever had her teeth done as she was a rescue from Ireland and has a history of abuse. Every time he came to the yard he fussed her and looked in her mouth so she'd got to know him when the time came.

We considered sedation, but money's a bit tight right now, so he said he'd give her a go without, and leave it if she played up. He took her out into the yard, let her go where she wanted to, following her wherever she went, all the time working away. She was an absolute angel. I'm so glad I skipped sedation as I'd never have known she'd be OK if she was half asleep.
 
Ooh this dentist is like that. Just follows them about. He's brilliant. Mare was total star today despite all the work he did. It's like she knew it would make her feel better
 
It frustrates me when people tell lies when selling a horse/pony. I dont know why they bother at times. I bought my daughters pony in august, even though he was a bit poor. Supposedly he was dosed recently and had teeth done in the previous month. Not the case. My horse dentist has a horse on livery with me, so he looked at him straight away, aged him as bang on to what was said. However, his mouth was in an awful state. he had at least 20 absesses on both sides, from cutting the inside of his mouth with sharp teeth. Dentist said he was very surprised that the pony wasn't throwing off kids for fun, he said very honest pony. He has put on condition, but it's taken time, best pony ever. x He was full of worms too, so dosed him very shortly after getting him. He wasn't an expensive pony, and adding the cost of dentist, etc... feed... he is still worth his weight in gold. That part, she got right. he's a hunting pony, rather than a sj pony, but he will be here for the rest of his days. We love him so much, he will never go anywhere. xx

Was she normal on the rides you had when you tried her? Why has she deterioated so much in 3 months? Maybe it is not ALL about the previous owner, and what they said and did not say? Just perhaps? 3 months is a quarter of a year and quite a long time in horse ownership....maybe, just maybe, you might be slightly culperable in that horses problems?
Of course I am sure you are not - but to give an example - for the first time ever, I tried some all wonderful sweet iron, calm then down and rev them up bit I had heard about on a forum such as this - and decided to give it a try (rather than the eggbut jointed snaffle I have used for years) what happened? I gave my horse a jolly sore mouth....should have stuck to what I thought was instictively right......beware of these forums - sometimes too many ideas to cope with!
