Some of you may know Inky has been having problems with runny eyes recently. He has been diagnosed with Entropion ( rolling in of the lower eyelid ) Well he went to Leahurst yesterday and had some stitches in his eyelids to try and turn them out. If this doesnt work its operation time

Now the question is.... I have the North West Summer Championship show on Monday that i have qualified for. Inky is not in any pain and the vets have said i should treat him as normal and they said its ok to go. As you can see he has blue stitches under his eye. DO I GO TO THE SHOW????
I am not really bothered about being placed down because of this but have paid for the entries and would treat it as more experience for Inky.
Would you go or not? Do you think he should get placed down for it? I would like your reasons for your answers as i would really appreciate your opinions...

Poor Inky - I hope it gets sorted and he is OK asap.

Re: the show, as long as he is not going to suffer in any undue way I think you should definitely go to the show. Why not?
I personally think you should not be marked down at all, but I cannot account for some show judges.
If you want to go, you go and show lovely Inky off.

I would go but explain to the judge what has happened and that the stitches aren't hurting him. I suspect they would ask you anyway.
I don't see why you should be placed down as its not like he is injuried.

if the vet has advised that it wont do inky any harm going then i think you should!! IMO i dont think the judges should mark you down however there are some mean judges out there who prob would!! like you said if nothing else its giving him experiance!!. good luck if you decide to go!!

I said no, don't go...and yes, you will probably be placed down for it as I believe it is considered a hereditary 'defect' (although quite common).
I'd be worried that the judges would be unimpressed (I know your vets are fine with it, but judges usually feel they have to be very careful).
He is a handsome chap so I can see why you want to show him off....can you not take him for walkies anyway?
Or wait til next year and hit the circuit!

*fingers crossed* for his recovery
I do think you should take him to the show, if he is not going to be uncomfortable in any way then I dont see any reason why you shouldn't go and loose your entry fees.
I don't think you should get placed down for it but I voted yes as some judges would probably do this unfortunaly. if you decide to take him good luck

Yes i can see where your coming from re the judges... He's not in any pain in fact the vets have said having the stitches should stop the irritation so he should theoretically feel better! He has been to plenty shows and i have two major shows coming up in September and just like to keep his hand in so i would purely use it for experience.
I am not sure what a judges view on it would be really... thus the poll!!!

Oh, I wasn't meaning there was any welfare reason not to take him....but judges are keen to promote horse welfare and it'll worry them a bit because they won't know. If you really want to take him, maybe get your vet to write a 'sick note' (or should that be a 'well note'

) and show it to the stewards etc before the class....
But he looks the type that will give you lots of success later anyway....without the blue mascara

oh i know you didnt mean that sorry!!!! Yes i understand what you mean, It doesnt look that nice really, would look alot better without the blue!!!! ( should have asked for black!!!! ) I have never seen it myself until now and am unsure what a judges perspective would be tbh. I would understand if i did get placed down because of it and would really just use the show for experience.

is there any way that you can get a note from your vet that you can show to the judge to confirm that he is not in pain and you have been advised to carry on as normal, it may stopped you getting marked down? xx Go and have fun anyway!!!

Bless, i'd go to the show for the experience, but I think you would be marked down for it because the judge would be worried about other competitors complaining if they didn't

Hope he gets better soon!

Thanks everyone for your honest replies. I think i will get a letter from the vets to be on the safe side. Like i said i would understand if he was placed down because of it but ive paid my entries and i would really just use it for the experience in preparation for my big shows ( hopefully he'll be ok by then!!! )

Poor little Inky! I really hope this helps him and is all that is needed. I thought it could have been allergies like Cashew had but I have heard of this problem before.

I really think I would go to the show. The stitches are not all that noticable at all from afar and I suspect if a judge wanted to question you they would just ask.
I have no idea if they would place you down, but I see no reason to do so.
I have seen judges be biased in some silly things though.

Inky is such a star that I doubt it will matter though!

Good luck and I say GO!

They are not hereditary but congenital eg born with them but not inherited.
Mostly thought in foals at least to be when there isnt enough fat on the face to push the eyelids out.
it often happens in premature foals or ones that are born underweight.

Yes take him for the experience if the stitches are no bother, but to be honest do expect to be unplaced unless he is so far in other ways above the rest.

Hope you both have fun and a good day out, and of course get a place.

Hi
I know little about showing at all so I am afraid I am of little help. However I was wondering if it would be pssible to ring the show organisers and get their advice.

It might save you a wasted journey.

Good luck!
