I don't know if you know but me and my boyfriend are looking for another dog, either a border collie or maybe a gsd.

We will only buy from a reputable breeder, but I was just trying to get an idea of prices so I went on pets for homes and saw this little chap:

I feel so sorry for him. How can they try and sell him for £300? Surely noone will buy him?

If its just me being over-sensitive I do apoligise but I feel so sorry for this little chap :(

Ahh - that's just MASSIVELY tugged at my heartstrings. Sadly, I just don't have the time or the expertise to take on a dog like that otherwise I'd be there in a shot.

Poor little chap, hope he finds a nice home - not sure who is going to pay £300 for deaf BC though, the regular 'supposedly non-deaf' ones are hard enough work!

Poor little chap. Wonder if they are aksing so much as if they put him cheap or free to good home etc it would attract unwanted buyers looking to make a cheap buck etc by selling on to a gullible inexperienced owner like you get with horses. Cant see anyone paying that though and he is probably best homed through word of mouth and recomendation but that is very hard.

Yeah exactly, I'd have him if he wasn't so much although I'm not the mnost experienced person, I think I could learn

Pets4homes is not a site I would use to buy a pup :o and it's not the best place for realistic prices either x

Poor wee fella :(

I wouldnt buy from their either tbh, where is the best place for prices? Just trying to get a rough idea of how much to pay and prices seem all over the place :D x

Interesting when you google the phone number - they sold an eight month old Yellow lab bitch a couple of months back as "don't have time" and have an earlier listing of the puppies (all at £300) not showing the white boy as availabe.
They also breed pet quality Ragdoll cats.
Anyone buying form them or similar breeders is supporting poor breeding practices but as for not looking for a pup on pets4homes have a look at some of the horrendous crosses advertised to the right ->

I have had dealings with deaf dogs. Not many people can cope.

Good work Sugar.....
I noticed those crosses earlier :o
I know of someone who had great success with a deaf dog using a you-know-what collar on the buzz setting, it was quite inspirational - where do you stand on that sort of thing?

ABC if you have a breed in mind, contact a breed club or society and have a chat to lots of different people about what you are looking for.

The "banned in some places collars" are great tools if used correctly. I have never personally used one but have tried one a friend had - on myself - and used remotely on the dog it was bought for it was excellent. without it the dog would have been shot or never off lead.
You used it in the same way as a clicker -The dog could be signalled when needed.

Breed clubs and breed rescues are excellent resources for prospective puppy owners. The worst people to ask are "breeders" with puppies ready to go. This includes some of the dodgy "rescues" that "enable" puppy farms.

Yeah, I tried a fancy-dan newfangled one from the USA on myself a few weeks ago and I was shocked, the first time I tried I thought it wasn't working, the second I thought someone had spilled a drop of lemonade on my arm, that's how subtle it was.
Like you, never had to use one myself but better a tingle to get the attention of the dog, then reward (rather than using it as a punishment) than a death sentence or constant conflict with the dog IMO.

There was a documentary on a few years ago that showed a lady using a collar with a vibrating part on it - maybe it was one of those collars that shouldn't be named. Anyway, she had a deaf Border Collie that she had trained and when she pressed the buzzer (I refuse to type 'vibrator'!! :-)), the dog knew it had to look at her - if she was in sight or go and find her if she wasn't . It was an amazing documentary and she had done wonders with the dog. At the end of the programme she'd taken on a white Boxer (I think) that was also deaf and was using the same training programme with him - she also used the deaf BC to show him the ropes.

The first thing she taught them was a 'high five' - not sure why but the whole programme was amazingly inspirational.

Did anyone else see it?
