poor Magic cut her leg badly

Magic has cut her leg 4 days ago the vet came out on day 1 and gave her bute and antib he said to cold hose it few days a day, today we left the dressing off so it could breath and we wrapped it up this evening with manuka honey on the dressing then some vet wrap round it to hold it on. any advice or tips please

OUCH. ****! How'd she manage that?

No advice really apart from keeping it clean and not dry out *too* much I guess?

A horse I know did this a few years ago on straight wire. She sliced her leg completely down the cannon bone, rather similar to this one, but a bit worse. She had months of treatment including skin grafts, but they didn't really take. Her leg looked rather like a doner kebab for months and never really went down to its normal size.

If I were you I would get the vet up again. Manuka honey hadn't been heard of in those days and I know it has good healing properties, but it seems a bit odd for the vet to come up just the once and then leave you to it. The vet who treated the horse in our yard came up every day for weeks to treat it.
 
Hi.

Is your vet a horse vet? With the flies and mud or stable bedding I think that should be kept covered. It is easy enough for the vet to put on a full limb bandage that can be changed every few days to begin with and then weekly til the wound is at least half the size +/- skin grafts. I think you will have a problem with infection leaving that open and slow the healing process and increase scarring.

Was money a problem with bandaging as I know it is expensive? Would definately get vet back out I'm afraid. :o
 
You are going to have to take expert advice on this one as the wound is in a place where she is going to have to use the joint. Is your vet booked to come back to see how it's progressing? I wouldn't be happy treating this on my own.

That does look horrible. But it doesnt look deep. It will take a few months to heal and you need to keep a close eye on it. I am not a vet so wont offer advice other than keep a close eye and call your vet if you are at all worried. You dont want any infection to set in in the hock.
 
keep doing what your doing, but keep it covered to stop any fluid building up around the area, the problem with a wound there is the fluid goes down the leg which isnt what you want. clean it with warm salt water twice daily and cold hose, these should be the only times its not dressed. see if your vet can give you some intrasite gel to put on it, or vetalintex gel is very good, it keeps a moist environment and it heals from the skin edges across, both of mine have leg wounds at the moment so have had my fair share of salt water and bandaging lol. keep up with what you are doing! i would bandage the bottom of her leg with a stable bandage to stop the fluid going down the leg!
eta- how long has she got on anti biotics?
 
We are taking advice from the vet and wouldnt attempt to treat anything like this on our own, its the first time we have been advised to use Manuka honey , just wondered if anyone had any experience of using this, its got good write ups but would love to no any first hand stories, Magic is very special to us and no expence is being spared at all, what ever it takes and all that!!
 
iv heard very good things about it. never used it myself because of flys etc but know people who have had good results!
 
ok, i would be surpised if he didnt give you more, mine has had 2 weeks with a much smaller wound than that. i would be thinking more of a months worth for yours. these bl00dy horses wory us silly dont they!
 
It should heal well, but would expect it to take at least 4-6 weeks to heal. You may be left with a slightly swollen hock in the short term.
Glad you are keeping it bandaged. Just surprised your vet has left you to it, as I would not have left my clients to deal with it in the beginning. After the first week or so I would have put on a good bandage and only changed it weekly depending on serous discharge, so as to stop interference and aid healing. Shall get back in my box now. :o

I'm sure you are doing a great job! :)
 
Manuka honey rocks we use it on everything only prob is keeping the flys off it but as your bandaging thats no probs,
Goodluck and keep bandaging cos you dont want swelling.
