why didn't anyone tell him that bucking bronco's are not naughty horses at all, but they do it because they have a strap tied round their whatsits!!

Also I did laugh when he said In Britain if you had a horse that did that you would sell it and say it's never done that before lol!!

He does seem to be very naive about certain aspects of the horse world but it is so sweet. at least he really cares about horses and wants to learn, probably people don't have the heart to say "errmmm actually Martin......"

I thought that comment was hilarious, it's so true but nobody would ever actually say it, i wont be buying a horse from him in the future lol. so innocent about everything then he comes out with that, love it

He only started riding a few years ago so he does sound novicey with some of the things he said. But I guess the show had to appeal to non riders too since it had a rather prime time slot on a sunday night. So his commentry couldnt be too indepth.

but then I suppose, he's not really horsey in the sense that most of us lot are. His wife has horses and he rides around on Chester quite happily and that's it really. He's not involved in the horse industry as such.

Sorry but Rodeo horses do not have straps tied round their watsits at all especially as a lot of them are actually Mares with no options of watsits to strap up. See this thread about the Martin Clunes program where the mythical strapping up of watsits was discussed at length.

yes thanks chavhorse I've just read that thread and it doesn't fully prove anything, just that the strap is called a bucking strap and is put there to make them buck, whether it goes anywhere near there genitals isn't what I'm getting at, or am I entering a debate about if it's cruel or not.

I'm just pointing out that nobody told him what it was and its purpose he genuinely thought that they were naughty unrideable horses, when that isn't the case.

I think that the responses from Enfys (a member who actually lives in the states, attends Rodeo's and appears to all intents and purposes to be a sensible human being) are fairly conclusive but hey ho!

I think it was the fact that your inital post said quite clearly "they have straps tied round their watsits" which I read and I think so will most other people as genitals which is really not the case at all....still its a good myth.

but it is there to make them buck?

Sorry didn't want to start a whole debate, and I didn't see the other thread about it until just now.

Just thought it was funny nobody told him and he thought they were naughty horses, even the cowboy he was talking to looked rather sheepish when he was saying it.

From what i'm aware of it is called a bucking/flank strap. Tied tight around the flanks which is uncomfortable for them and they buck to try to get it off. I guess it may bother a gelding/stallion's genitals but the flanks are sensitive for any horse.

...... It would end up for sale on Project Horses with a hideously long advert explaining the good and bad points !!

I liked the fact that Martin Clunes was not an expert - and at no time at all did he ever try to pretend he was. He had a lovely approach to horses - with no cynisism or end plan which made the whole programme highly enjoyable.

I really really really enjoyed this (and the one he did about dogs too). Really nice seeing some good horsey TV getting into the mainstream. Martin really does seem to be just a novice rider who obviously adores his horses and wants to learn more. I thought it was lovely when the Kazaks gave him a horse as he was an honoured guest. I'm actually giving these and the dog ones to a friend to watch and she's not horsey at all and still wants to see them :)

I agree they were very good programmes, I'm very disappointed to find out they were the only 2!
He is a very nice man, and even my very unhorsey husband enjoyed watching it (and made some very good observations too!)
I suppose it opens a whole other can of worms discussing the use of bucking straps in an hour long programme that had about 10 mins dedicated to the rodeo bit. But I thought it was quite genuine and sweet of him to say what he did say. Especially the bit about selling the horse!

cool, so if you wanted to ride one of those horses normally would they be ok?

Also just something I just thought of, in the racing bit at Fontwell the announcer in the background said Pete the Feat my friend works for his trainer and rides the horse out everyday she's always talking about him!!
