I put the Nitty one and Brownhorse in the field we have down the track today for some grass. My friend put her horse on the other side of the field too as his field mate is on box rest and he needs company. Usually they are in their field on the yard but it is as bald as a badgers behind so chucked them 'up the road' (it is a farm track of which part is a public footpath)

Went to get them in and Nits and friends horse were belting around and snorting as some idiot chav kids were hoooning up and down the track a bit further over on a motor bike. With no helmet on I may add!

Brought them all in which was interesting but not impossible and friends horse and brownhorse settled down to eat haylage. Poor Nitty though was genuinely upset and was pacing in the stable, sweating and wouldn't touch her food. She calmed down after about half an hour but I felt pretty sorry for the poor old girl. She isn't easily wound up so they must have scared the beejesus out of her.

They are kids from the city so I don't expect them to know about horses but surely common sense says that if you notice your activity is causing someone's horse to explode you should stop. Grrrr. They're lucky I didn't get my hands on them!

They probably thought she was enjoying it and wanted to join in! After all, they were having a great time, and that's all that matters, isn't it? At least as far as they are concerned.

At least they were not in the field with the horses, right... or behind you while out hacking on the road...

If they start using the track for motorbikes on a regular basis is there anything you can do to try to get her used to the traffic noise, so she doesn't get upset? May be easier to try to adapt than changing their behaviour :-(

If they are under age and have no license, are without helmets, and do not have the landowners permission to use the land, they are committing a number of offenses, including driving without insurance. Report them to the police, if they are around again (which I am sure they will be). The police do act on information like this/ For one thing, how did they get the bike there? Presumably they took the bike on the public road to get to the path, also against the law.

Poor Nitty! Glad there was no lasting harm done.

Might also be worth speaking to the council if they come back regularly. When I still lived near London we had a problem with kids on mopeds/ bikes on a local bridlepath - it was really dangerous because it ran through a stand of trees with blind corners. All the local riders, dog walkers, cyclists etc who used it wrote and complained. The council put in sleepers just over a foot high in two rows that the horses could step over at either end of the path, which put a stop to it.

She is ok with traffic really. She lives beside the A14 so is pretty unflappable usually. I think it was partly due to the fact it was dusk and partly the fact that she doesn't expect to see traffic there that got to her!

We have loads of issues with stuff like this. To get to the yard, and on to the tracks, you already have to go through a width restricted gate. Before we had it the travelling community thought our drive way was a great place to set up camp :(

People come and fly tip all over the road too and at the moment we have some guy keeping his dogs in a van down the road to the yard too. People are weird!

I wish I could be back out in the countryside proper where this stuff doesn't happen. Stupid OH!!

It's been the same problems with that yard for 15+ years. :(

I hate the drive to my place, but it's worth it to be properly out of the town.

It's kind of poo but I love all the people and the fact I can come and go as I please so I guess I'll get over it.

One day I'll be able to move out of the city and then life will be great.

Although Cambridgeshire seems to be really bad for this stuff in general. I was quite shocked when I moved here. In Norfolk we don't have travellers and fly tipping and stuff. I expected Cambridgeshire to be nice but it's really pretty grotty outside the city. Especially to the north and east which is where I'd rather be due to wanting to get back to Norfolk reasonably often.

Can I be nosey and ask which direction you're in? So that I can dream of escaping!

About 7 1/2 miles NW :) And brilliant hacking there too - I can head out for 5+ hours (or I could do if I had a horse I can ride ) I love my little yard! :D

See and here lies my problem. All the nice places are so utterly in the wrong direction :) I work in Babraham unfortunately so already have a commute and I can't get out of bed as it is! It's nice down south but there seems to be a scarcity of yards down there and I don't want to have to drive round the city to get home (to the sticks I mean). I was looking out Balsham way but at the moment we have to be in town as OH commutes to London every day :( I just wish I could go back to Norfolk where my bessie mate is and play ponies like we used to as kids!

I hate hacking so at least that aspect doesn't bother me! I get blisters on my bum if I sit still too long!

Don't I feel sorry for myself today?
