Just seen another appeal from a rescue for a home for an older dog. This is just an extract, the dog has been in the kennels for 11 years and is also losing his sight apparently. Surely it would be kinder to get the vet to visit and put this lad to sleep.

"I find it very frightening if I have to go out of my comfort zone, after all these years – 11 is it? – living here. The worst thing is those cars – my goodness, how can anyone bear to go in one? They are terrifying to me. I once had to go in one to the vets, and I had to have what they called a ‘happy pill’ to get me there. Unfortunately, when I woke up and realised I was somewhere strange, I was most upset and my carers had to come and bring me back home, where I felt safe again.

My carers have been trying to find a new family for me, I know; but I realise it’s a hard job for them. I’m very wary of children – they’re a bit unpredictable, and tend to come at you wanting to stroke you when you’re not ready. I like the friends who come to see me regularly, and my carers, so if a new family wanted to take me home, they would need to be prepared to come and visit me quite a few times first, to make sure I liked them. The best thing, of course, would be to find, say, a farmer nearby, who could walk me home! And then let me potter about on the farm, doing my own thing, for however long I have left. Yes, I think I would like that…"

I quite agree with you. So unfair to the old dog. I do wish the so called rescue centres would face up to reality and know when to give up.

I mean how can they write that piece from his perspective and not realize the dangers of him being able to poddle about on his own in a farmyard with all the dangers that incurs; there are enough accidents of dogs (and people) getting squashed that have all their faculties let alone a blind one that doesn't know where he is.

If they care so much, why hasn't one of them taken him home for a few comfortable weeks, I know I would have done if I worked there and he would have the benefit of knowing who he was with too.

I interpreted that ad as "I will bark at anything and snap at anyone who wants to stroke me. I'm a pain to travel and would be best in a home where no one does anything with me except feed me".
