Just seen another appeal from a rescue for a home for an older dog. This is just an extract, the dog has been in the kennels for 11 years and is also losing his sight apparently. Surely it would be kinder to get the vet to visit and put this lad to sleep.
"I find it very frightening if I have to go out of my comfort zone, after all these years 11 is it? living here. The worst thing is those cars my goodness, how can anyone bear to go in one? They are terrifying to me. I once had to go in one to the vets, and I had to have what they called a happy pill to get me there. Unfortunately, when I woke up and realised I was somewhere strange, I was most upset and my carers had to come and bring me back home, where I felt safe again.
My carers have been trying to find a new family for me, I know; but I realise its a hard job for them. Im very wary of children theyre a bit unpredictable, and tend to come at you wanting to stroke you when youre not ready. I like the friends who come to see me regularly, and my carers, so if a new family wanted to take me home, they would need to be prepared to come and visit me quite a few times first, to make sure I liked them. The best thing, of course, would be to find, say, a farmer nearby, who could walk me home! And then let me potter about on the farm, doing my own thing, for however long I have left. Yes, I think I would like that "
