Poor PF - She HAS broken her jaw

She's so stoical that 3 vets told me they didn't think it was broken. Possibly a hairline fracture at most. However, she was x-rayed last week and I spoke to vet today and it IS broken and there's some displacement *gulp*

She'll need 2-3 months off *sniffle* Poor girlie. I shudder to think how much worse it could've been!! At least she's relaxed, eating and happy.
 
Oh, I am so sorry - what an awful thing to happen to the dear girl. How on earth did she do that?

I am so sorry to hear this. My mare is recovering from a fractured jaw, the lower mandible was completely in two. She was kicked and had to go for two operations at a veterinary hospital, one to have screws and wire in, and the next to have it out because it became so infected. It has been so stressful this summer, so my heart goes out to you on this. However, she is making a good recovery, and a fractured jaw is much better at healing, so I've been told, because of the good blood supply to the head. I've ridden her today for the first time since May, and it was great. I do hope your mare recovers soon, pm me anytime. Have picked up lots of tips over the last three months. Will be thinking of you both.
 
Oh my goodness what a nightmare for you! I'd be frantic. As it is I'm gutted I didn't take it more seriously. I only had an inkling today (just before phoning vet) that it might be worse than we first thought. Considering how awful your girl's injury was, 3 months seems like no time at all. Was she OK to eat? Have you got any photos? (I don't mean to be morbid at all, but would like to compare)

ETS: Actually, I've just remembered seeing your 'update' photos. I'm incredibly impressed at how well she's healed if you can ride already! You must be delighted

Yep, you could say we really DO do everything together. I'd happily take PF's months if she could be OK. She's much less whingy than I've been about it!

Well, I'm definitely resting it, so fingers crossed Doc will see some improvement when he gets the x-rays tomorrow

Eating was a bit of a nightmare, she couldn't eat any hay. I was making up mashes and feeding them 4 hourly throughout the day. I did put some pics on here a while back so you will be able to look back through. The fact that your mare had a closed fracture is great, the infection wouldn't have got in so prognosis for that really really good. Liri got the infection in the bone and around the screws. But the healing has been amazing, and numerous people and vets said if the injury had been in a leg for example, the prospects wouldn't have been so good. We can't use a bit until November at least (next set of x-rays), and we can't use a bitless bridle because of jaw pressure, which is why Monty Roberts headcollar seems our only option at the moment. I felt so low so many times, but looking back now, I wish I'd listened to everyone around me being so positive, including some really caring people on this forum, who have continued to pm me, you know who you are. We will be keeping everything crossed for a very speedy recovery for you both, and like I said before, pm me whenever you like.
 
I am so sorry to read this - poor PF! I know you thought that something was wrong, didn't you? I hope she heals well and is back to normal after her time off. And you, too, with your shoulder. How sad and frustrating for you

I has my suspicions, but she was soo good and calm I thought the vets must be right. Ah well, I keep reminding myself she could've hurt herself much worse (or should that be 'more badly'?) and I feel better about not being able to ride... I actually really really wanted to get back on her. I can wait now

She struggles a bit with the stalks of the alfalfa, but she's fine with oats and as long as she doesn't drop weight I'm not going to worry too much.

Aw no the poor girl, give her a hug from me. She doesn't need any surgery or anything though does she? Just lots of rest, sugar cubes and cuddles. How are you feeling now pf?

Hope you're both good as new soon x
