Well the hunt collected him this morning (I know not everyones choice so please dont make this any harder that it already is). Donna was getting really stress in the stable which was upsetting the filly next door so I have given her a few ACPS and let them both out in the field. Donna wont leave the spot where he lay unless the fill comes any closer than 100yards then she chases her away.
Well while the hunt was with me I got a text from the main vet of the first practice asking how the pony was.
I replied that he was dead and that I was not happy. He has left me a message saying that he will call me at lunchtime to discuss what has happened as he is mostly unaware of what has happened.
Ok, I understand your annoyance re. the vet - but in your own mind you knew it was laminitis - so why not treat it accordingly? You could also have asked the practice to send out another vet, in whose diagnosis you would have trusted more. And you didn't have to turn him out.
I agree that we rely on our vets for diagnosis - but sometimes they do get it wrong, especially if inexperienced. As an experienced owner you knew (or felt) the diagnosis to be wrong and challenged it - and didn't have to follow their recommendation of turn out.
Amymay I hear what you are saying but sometimes its incredibly difficult to challenge the opinion of a vet, even if you are sure they have their diagnosis wrong. Had this on two occasions, one with a horse (who i turned out to be right about) and currently one with a dog (who I am convinced has all the signs/symtoms of a respiratory fungal disease) but the vet says she does not have the disease I believe she has. She is uninsured and is registered with a referral centre which has cost my partner a small fortune and is no further forward than we were two years ago.
Its so difficult to even consider the fact that you may know more than the vet from researching something, but its ever harder to try to prove your theory or to stand up and be counted and make people listen to you.
I know vets are not Gods but we do rely on them to make the right decision and reach the right diagnosis in the least amount of time possible and with the least amount of money being spent to reach that diagnosis and sometimes its hard for them:,they are human after all.
