Poor, poor child. Poor parents.

sadly I suspect that even a body protector would not be adequate if a horse stepped on ones chest . So sorry for the parents and family .

Ditto this. Possibly the EXO may have been the only BP on the market to have have made a difference. But even those chances would have been slim.

Such a shame, she sounded like a lovely lovely girl (have friend who new her).

I suppose this brings up how fragile we are when compared to the size and weight of a horse. My thoughts are with her family and friends, I cannot imagine having to deal with something as awful as this!

Oh my goodness, how awful and unfortunate. RIP to Charlotte James and my most sincere sympathies to her family.

I can think of two makes that I think would be. the Exo (if the horse's foot didn't go between the metal bars of the cage, but even then, unless the horse's foot stayed there for ages, I think the material would hold) and the Kan. A rider in Ireland got badly studded in the chest area, Kan was wrecked but rider was unharmed...
But how many of us wear a bp every time we ride? statistically for horse riders iirc about the same number of serious torso injuries are recorded as serious head injuries, though... :( :( :( perhaps we all should.

How awful!! condolences to all her family!!

I too lost a teenage daughter, totally different circumstances and I do not think it it is appropriate to be criticizing not wearing a BP on this thread!!
It is not like not wearing a hat (yet)! How many of us or our children regularly ride and pop the odd fence without wearing one?? I know there are some on here that will say I NEVER DO IT, but I am talking about over all

I know I do! In fact I did tonight with 2 others (none wearing a BP) and it could so easily have gone badly especially as someone VERY close started very loud fireworks while we were in the school. (luckily finished jumping or would have been a bad accident)!

I am not saying that maybe we shouldn't ALL wear one all the time or EVERY time we jump just I don't think it is appropriate on this thread to criticize

Terribly tragic and my thoughts go out to the family concerned. They must be devastated.

I don't think it is appropriate to discuss whether the accident could have been avoided at this stage, as we don't have the full details of what happened.

Exactly. I really only started the thread to express shock and sympathy - I have a (nearly) 14yo daughter - and it just doesn't bear thinking about.

Sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family. What a terrible accident for which there can be no 'if onlys'. I think heaven must be short of angels, as too many have been taken of late.

I hope she was enjoying the jumping, as it's the most I can wish for her.

God Bless and sleep well.

That is beautiful x

to the parents (and how my heart is breaking for you) family and friends my heart and thoughts are with you - to lose a daughter, your child, your baby so young - there are no words that can make you feel better but tonight i will be silent and hold you in my thoughts x x

What a horrible, tragic accident. My thoughts are with her family and friends.

This is the second fatal accident I have heard of in the space of weeks where the rider was stepped on by the horse. A little Swedish girl died only weeks ago from being stepped on the stomach when she fell off her horse during a riding lesson. According to the newspaper report I found, she had a bruise on her stomach but seemed ok at first, but died from internal bleeding. It is quite scary really.
