Poor, Poor Dotty

I went to get the mares in from the field this morning for breakfast and they all walk in loose to the yard down a fenced drive. They all came in fine except Dotty who just stayed standing in the field. When I went to get her she wouldn't move, I looked her all over and she had two grazes either side of her head by her eyes and her face was swollen. She seemed very dazed and when I put a hand near her eye there was no blink reflex.
Anyway I managed to walk her down to the yard with difficulty as she didn't want to move. Fortunately the vet was on the way to scan her mother.
The upshot is she has caught her head in something and is blind in both eyes. The good news is hopefully it is temporary due to swelling putting pressure on the optic nerves. The vet is on his way back now to check her.

Her field is complete post and rail and I cannot work out how it has happened, I have been around the field and I cant see anythink that she could have got stuck in. Poor poor Dotty!

Well the vet has been and she is responding to the drugs. He will see her again in the morning to give her more steroids and we will put her on Gastroguard to protect her tummy. She is very distressed and just wants cuddles so I am spending most of my time with her at the moment.
Initially she was not drinking as she couldn't find the udder so I gave her a bottle but she has now started sucking again which is promising.

The only thing I can think she did is put her head through the gate and it got stuck there, who knows??

Sometimes foal have mad whizzes and run headlong into things, including the fence or trees.

I bet she was playing and failed to stop in time.
Fingers' crossed she soon recovers.

I have had personal experience of a massive blow to the head causing a lot more than blindness

but the horse pulled through and fully regained eyesight and coordination

Took time and steroids, but he got there.

Dotty took a turn for the worst yesterday evening and the vet came and tubed some milk down her and gave her saline IV. Unfortunately Dotty did not make it and died over night.

Thank you all for you kind words and support, this is the first foal I have lost in 21 years of breeding.
