I am so, so mad. I got to the yard tonight to learn that just a few minutes before, some b*stard had run over one of the hound pups on the road that leads to the yard. It is a 60 limit, but it's single track and with many bends - any sensible driver would adjust their speed accordingly. But not this tw*t. S/he hit the poor pup - and ok, I accept that accidents can happen, and that the pups should not have wandered onto the road - but then the driver just drove off. Poor pup dragged herself back up to the yard, with her hips shattered, and the driver didn't give a damn.

One day, someone is going to get seriously hurt on that road. I've been there a year and already had to involve police twice; there's also someone whose horse was so spooked by a speeding coach (incidentally, from the same company as one I had to complain about myself) that she had to jump over a hedge to get off the road and out of the way.

RIP poor little hound puppy. She was so sweet and loving :(
 
Oh that's awful.

Something very similar happened to my dog when I was about 11. He ran out of our front door (naughty I know but we were trying to train him, plus I was young and forgetful in those days) and down to the road, which sounds just like yours.

Someone hit him and he flew up in the air and about 30 foot down the road and they just drove off. With me standing at the road side screaming. What is wrong with people? He died of shock and internal bleeding on the operating table at the vets.

Just horrible. People are so sickening.
 
:mad: These people make me so angry! How can they be so careless as to do that sort of speed on such a road and so heartless as to leave the puppy for dead??! The speed limits also need to be sorted out on these types of roads: countless times have I been out on horses, or have seen people out on horses, with people speeding around blind bends right behind them and having to break hard to stop in time! Thick, stupid people. There isn't enough education out there and people seem to think that a limit is the speed they have to drive, whether it's appropriate or not for the road. RIP poor puppy, and I send you many hugs - it must have been a shock. xxx

Had the same when I was about 13. Dog followed me on the road and I couldn't catch her (my fault, I was on my own trying to sort all of the animals out, as the family pub had burnt down in the night and they were gone trying to salvage things). Got hit by a 4x4 and killed instantly, and they didn't stop.

She left behind three 8 w/o puppies and a devestated family and i still can't talk about her to this day.
 
Whilst I believe the pup should not have been in the position for it to get out to the road, the driver has a duty under Section 170 of the road traffic act to stop and exchange details. Or take his documents to a police station & report the accident there. Technically if he has done neither, he is liable for prosecution.
 
VERY ignorant and cruel of the driver to drive on. You would think that they would have stopped to make sure the pup was ok.
However, The pup was wandering loose on a 60mph stretch of narrow road??? That also makes me cross. Not all blame should be directed at the driver.

It always amazes me when I hear stories of human beings causing massive pain and then just leaving whatever it is to die........ I mean what type of person can then sleep at night knowing what they have done?

absolutely

accidents happen and what happened here is very sad and upsetting howver the situation would be less upsetting if the driver had stopped and let somebody know- terrible. Howver i do wonder, if it was dark perhaps the driver thought it was a rabbit or something? (not deefending the driver in anyway might i add...)
 
Is is very sad that the puppy suffered and the driver did not stop, who knows what was behind this decision, but I suspect he/she didn't think for one moment a puppy would be wandering on a major road and thought perhaps it was a rabbit or similar.

The owner of the pup has a responsibility too and perhaps this is a wake up call - what if the driver had panicked and hit a tree and ended up injured or dead.

My dogs have gotten out without my knowledge and it was a worrying time, for them and for oblivious drivers. If they caused an accident or were injured I would blame no one but myself.

Not long ago near me, driving along the motorway, a van and several cars including a police car hit and ran over a man and dragged his body for some considerable way. Several cars did not stop initially, thinking they had hit an animal. The last thing they expected was a person wandering along in the dark.
 
Whilst this is tragic and very sad, how do you know the driver was driving too fast (accidents can happen at any speed) and more importantly, what on earth were pups doing wandering on a lane in the first place????????
I personally think it's rather irresponsible for the owner of the pups not to know where they were!!!!
The driver may not have seen it, may not have realised that she even hit it, and if she did, may not have realised it was a pup.

As for the person who just wrote that she hopes the driver hits a tree and kills herself, that is just a disgusting and un-necessary thing to say!!
 
Poor dog :( the driver SHOULD have stopped and exchanged details as they legally should do - and any compassionate human being would surely stop and check??? The most heartbreaking thing was that the pup was not killed instantly.
On the other hand, if my dogs got out into the road and got hit, I'd blame nobody but myself. I accept accidents happen but its my duty as their owner to make sure I know where they are and that they're safe - puppies OR adults.
I don't know how I'd sleep knowing I'd hit an animal like that and not even stopped to check the situation :(

Part of the above is correct. If a driver hits a horse, donkey, mule, dog, goat, sheep or pig (guess what I used to do for a living?!) he/she is obliged to either exchange details with the owner, or report the RTC to any police officer or at a police station as soon as is practicable at least within 24 hrs. However it is unlikely in this situation that the driver would be prosecuted. If the car was damaged, the driver would be claiming from the dog owner as the dog shouldn't have been on the road

Anyway, legalities over, Miz Elz, sympathies - there are some heartless idiots out there! x
