I was surprised that she seemed to call it a day even before she realised that he'd pulled a shoe... Didn't have her as a 'one refusal and i give up' type of rider, but hey ho.

But there wasn't really any point carrying on was there. As Tina Cook pointed out, Toytown owes her absolutely nothing, it's not like he needs the experience, and given his injury history she probably thought it was better to put him away safe for another day. Someone made the comment in Comp Riders that there's enough 4*'s nowadays that riders don't have to complete for sake of it, if they have a refusal they can save the horse for another day, which is probably why many of the riders who had refusals today retired.

I didn't think he looked really happy from the word go. All a bit untidy and stumbly. Absolutely right to pull him up. No point in pressing a fragile horse like T if you stand no chance of being placed.

Rotten day for her all round. Hope AFS is OK.

Felt so sorry for her.

I think the incident with the photographer was yesterday.

Yes i think it was Mark Todd talking about that today. He said the old format of doing roads, tracks & steeplechase meant that you were more inclined to plough on, as the horse would need a decent rest after that regardless of whether you finished the cross country.

I suppose you're right that he doesn't need the experience. There was a girl who had a refusal at the water ( a first timer i think - cant remember who?) who up until that point had jumped really well, so i thought it was a great shame for her to just give up there and then.

ETA: Emily Baldwin was who i was thinking of!

Oh dear!

Don't get me wrong, I like Zara as I always thought she was a very dedicated rider. However, she was supposed to be at a 2 star in Perthshire last weekend with 5 horses but withdrew them all to stay in Cannes!

Obviously having too much of a good time to be bothered with competing her horses despite the effort of her grooms to get the horses ready to go!!

Yep! I was the same, standing about like a lemon waiting to see her but found out this week from a friend that organises the Central Scotland horse trials that she was in Cannes and decided to stay there.

As I say, having too much of a good time to bother with the horses!!

Was quite happy though as saw Ian Stark go round the X-country!

Are you aware that that actually sounds quite bitchy? Zara has sponsors to answer to. If she just 'couldn't be bothered' I think they might have a thing or two to say about it.

Erm??? She's royalty!! Do you really think she gives a S**t about sponsers??!!

I'm not meaning to sound bitchy, as I don't know her personally so what difference does it make to my life ??

Just thought is was a comment worth making since everyone, including myself previously, thought that she was dedicated to her sport !!

If you dont know her personally who are you to comment on her life, you dont know the ins and outs so how can you comment, you dont get 2 horses to Badminton without dedication

Personally I think she is very dedicated to the sport, and anyone who thinks someone (royalty or not!) can get to the very top without putting in supreme effort and hard graft, obviously doesn't know what is involved!

Do you think she just turns up and sits on her horses for the duration of the event and then just leaves them with the grooms and buggers off?!

The fact she pulled up Ardfield Magic Star and walked him home, and then retired Toytown shows she is very dedicated to the long term health and happiness of her horses. Not just pleasing people who know very little for one day of the year!

Actually, she does not have a Royal title. Her riding is funded by sponsors and NOT by her family, so I'd say YES, she certainly DOES give a sh!t.
If it makes no difference to you, why are you making such a big deal about her not turning up at an event? Fact is you have no idea why she didn't present her horses, but you're perfectly happy to 'assume' she couldn't be bothered. Do you do the same for all other riders?

Well at the end of the day, to the sponsors it's the name that matters isn't it !!!!!!!!

I saw a young girl go round Badders today with total flair and guts and do a super round without a "name" to back her up.

That's what impresses me.

Not someone that can have all these unnamed people in the background that do all the hard work getting these horses ready for their 'famous' riders who suddenly decide they can't be bothered.!!

That's who I have admiration for...those that really put the hard graft in for these horses to look like they are, to perform as they do, not the 'celebrity' rider, that jumps on and does a round without having to do the hard work that get them there in the first place.
