Don't get me wrong, I like Zara as I always thought she was a very dedicated rider. However, she was supposed to be at a 2 star in Perthshire last weekend with 5 horses but withdrew them all to stay in Cannes!
Obviously having too much of a good time to be bothered with competing her horses despite the effort of her grooms to get the horses ready to go!!

If that was the real reason, then I suggest a good game of 'burn the witch', I mean honestly what does that girl want, a holiday?
Grooms are paid to get the horses ready, they would have to do it whether she was going or not.
I don't think anyone would argue Zara has advantages but no more so - and in more than a few cases less so - than many other top level riders. There are some people in the sport with some very deep pockets behind them, don't kid yourself.
As to the withdrawl, for what my opinion is worth (not much
) I think she made the right choice. The horse jumped the first few fences well but then had a definite blip at a similar question to the one they really had a mess at. For whatever reason it wasn't working so better to live (literally) to fight another day. If she's soldiered on and had a nasty wreck would that have been better?
It's true there are more chances to run horses these days but there is also much more public pressure to stay safe - this can't be completely out of people's minds in those sorts of situations. They're damned either way - if they don't keep going they're "wimping out" if they do, they're pushing the horse unnecessarily and if they do and something bad happens, they're negligent/cruel/stupid. Hard to say what to do. I think what it does do, though, is give people the chance to make the decision they feel is in their horse's best interests without necessarily being called a wimp, as would have been far more the case in times past. Empathy is no bad thing, even if it's encouraged by media glare.
You really don't know unless you're sitting on the horse in those situations. I thought the commentators expressed a few justified moments of concern about a few rides - which I have to say, I shared - but even those situations could have felt very different than they looked.
As far as people to feel sorry for, poor Bonnie Moser to come all that way and spend all that money to not get past fence 12. Pretty grim.
That's who I have admiration for...those that really put the hard graft in for these horses to look like they are, to perform as they do, not the 'celebrity' rider, that jumps on and does a round without having to do the hard work that get them there in the first place.

Yep, that's how Zara got to Badminton
Ardfield Magic Star was brought on by Zara from Novice to **** in 4 seasons.
Tsunami II had only done a couple of Novices IIRC
Toytown had been rather nifty at the lower levels but still had only Noviced when she got him.
You don't get 5 horses to **** without putting the hours in.

Well at the end of the day, to the sponsors it's the name that matters isn't it !!!!!!!!
[/ QUOTE ]
Not if the name doesn't turn up at events. How does that not sound bitchy to you? You're essentially saying she's only got sponsorship because of her name.

I saw a young girl go round Badders today with total flair and guts and do a super round without a "name" to back her up.
That's what impresses me.
[/ QUOTE ]
Were you not impressed enough to remember her name?
Zara would be photographed and followed around by paparazzi no matter WHAT she did with her life. It so happens that she's a VERY good rider. Good enough to win the world championship. I think that's pretty impressive, even if you don't.

Not someone that can have all these unnamed people in the background that do all the hard work getting these horses ready for their 'famous' riders who suddenly decide they can't be bothered.!!
[/ QUOTE ]
For a fan you seem to be slagging her off a lot. Do you not think that Mark Todd, and Mary King, and Andrew Nicholson have 'unnamed' people behind the scenes mucking out, and bandaging and plaiting up and cleaning tack? What about your unnamed rider? How on earth would you know that she does all that herself

How is that NOT bitchy? You're saying that Zara didn't train her horses herself??
Jeeeeezz.... you really are clutching at straws now, aren't you?
Nooooooooooo, you're not bitchy or envious at all, are you?

And what do you think Zara did to become European champion? Do you think she just turned up at the event and rode? Since you're on the HHO forum then I assume you ride yourself, so you of all people should appreciate the time and effort that you need to put in to do well even at local level, let alone 4*.
Touch of the green eyed monster I think!
And no, I don't think it is the "name" that matters to the sponsors. The sponsors want to be associated with someone who does well, no matter what the name is.
All pros are backed up by sponsors and an owner or two with a very deep pocket. And they all have grooms to prepare the horses - it's kind of their job...!
I thought a forum was a way of expressing your thoughts and feelings without too much of a beating?
I'm accused of a being a brat, a green-eyed monster and being bitchy??????? I am nothing but a lowly happy hacker so have nothing to gain or be jealous about. I don't have the guts to do what Zara, or any other eventer, does.
Just thought I would comment how I feel. Oops, bad move !!
I have ridden the Queen's horses numerous times and have met her out hacking at Balmoral, so have nothing against royalty whatsoever.
I will now slink into a corner and not say another word.
Just a point by the way ShaznTaz, Zara Phillips was actually in Cannes last week as part of her promotional duties for her sponsors (Rolex) - she was contractually obliged to be there. So hardly swanning about having a good time, I think you'll find she was fulfilling her side of the deal.
Just a thought, but surely if someone has a lot of horses going round and no sponsor then they must have someone funding it - possibly family money............and therefore they are more likely to have possibly bought a horse at that level than worked their way up and prove themselves like someone who has sponsorship would do............
Guys why are you all arguing over basically nothing none of you even Know her (well one or two of you maybe or maybe not) I just put this thread on here to see what you guys all thought about it and no it has just turned into a massive blaze its pathetic!!!
Open forum and all. We'll ask you permission next time for what we can and can't talk about on your thread, OK?
It just p*sses me off when people are gratuituously bitchy about someone they know nothing about. I know a bit more than nothing.
