OH and I off work today...
Took horse to vet - fine!!
Took horse to farrier to get shoes back on - P finds an old tennis ball so is delighted. Running about on the nice short grass outside the forge. Suddenly pulls up dead lame....

Totally ripped her outside nail off (hanging literally by a tiny corner)..

So back at vets (yes the same one) for the 2pm surgery, and poor P had to have a muzzle put on (I couldn't guarantee she wouldn't bite the vet, although she has never bit before, I could tell it was extremely sore as she wouldn't let me or OH bandage or clean it). Vet did v quick exam and said she would have to stay and be sedated and have it cut off as it was so high up. Asked it is would re-grow and she said maybe, asked would she have a bandage and was told no - would leave it open to air.

Called back at 3pm and she was VERY woozy, and had an ENORMOUS blue bandage on paw (think it must have bled more than expected).

She is still v sleepy (though woke up enough to eat some chicken before going back to sleep)....

Any tips for the next couple of days. Not forecast to rain thankfully, but she is very much a 'charge about outside' type of doggie. How will I keep her bandage dry?? and do nails tend to regrow???

Help

My westie had the same sort of accident and his nail grew back so fingers crossed for Poppy! And maybe but duck tape over her bandage to keep it dry? Hope she gets better.

Was thinking something like that, or maybe the corner of a plastic bag with a little tape around the top!!

Anyone know if this is a common injury. P has hooned around after balls etc since she was a pup, and has never even tweaked a claw before!!

They could at least have used a red bit of vetrap (to match her red coat

)
