My new girl has a sunburnt nose again. I put factor 50 on yesterday morning and she was sore today from yesterday. I cant go up in the middle of the day to reapply. Is there any products on the market I can use. I know that you can buy fly masks for UV protection but ideally I just have one for her nose and attached to a field headcollar?

Any opinions, recommendations and ideas?????

i used sudocrem every day on my mares nose, she hates it but it works, its thick so she cant rub it off easily, it protects her skin and keeps her nose nice and kissable (not that she like that either!!)

Really? Ahh have a pot of that, will try that tomorrow!! :)

I havn't got experiance with that particular muzzle protector, but I got the full face UV mask from equilibrium (cost a blooming fortune!) and the mesh rubbed my horse's nose to the point of drawing blood within half a days use. I'm never putting it near him again. I have a similar problem with my boy. I use really thick factor 50, but his nose is a bit on the pink side after the amount of sun we have had these past few days!!! I think I will try the sudocrem trick!!!!!!

Another massive vote for sudocrem, it's fantastic and then fly mask with nose net (equilibrium ones are brilliant) I never had a problem with my mare once I used these xx

Thats a shame, my TB wears his 24/7 with no ill effects, all the horses on the yard wear either the one with the nose net or the one without, without issue, that is 8 horses, they all wear them 24/7. I guess it depends on the individual animal :)

I tried sudocreme and it didnt work....it is great to heal burnt noses but has no protection from the UV rays....or so I have found anyway. I buy baby factor 50 which is really thick.....

I use the sticks that you would use on kids.

You can get a Boots Soltan one off Ebay for about £1.99. They are a really high factor (30+), waterproof and they come in cool colours so you can see where you have put it.

They are quite thick and waxy so it doesn't drip off.

Give you a giggle in the morning as well when your horse goes out with a blue, green or even red nose!!!

I've had comments off people that even in the afternoon my horses still have it on so i know it lasts.

My.little spotty has no hair at all half way up his face and has pink skin. He also has pink eyelids. He absolutely hates the masks with the nose on and gets them off so I have no choice really than to get him in during the day if its like this. Even at 5pm he still goes out with a normal mask and factor 50 on. He's a bit special but I love him. Its a nightmare as he even has pink boy bits and bum. Tut. There is a horse sun block that I got that was about 7 quid which is good and I would try a long mask as mine is a baby and isn't very tolerant.

Mine has now flatly refused to have her sunhat back on!! Then when I try to put sun cream on she has been known to strike out, hence the mask. We have tried the equlibrium nose thing today and it seemed ok. We had some dramatics when I first tried to put it on though. They just don't know how lucky they are sometimes!!

Having tried factor 50 sun block and the field mask, which he removed in half an hour, i tried Sudocreme as recomended by some1 on here and hes now fine

I would recommend the equalibrium nose protector, I've used it on 2 pink nosed horses & they never get sun burn, it doesn't rub either.
I think it's a good product as there's no way my horse will let me put sun block on her nose.

My boy has a very pink nose and is really susceptible to the sun. Have tried all products over the years and the best system for us is factor 50 first thing in the morning to protect, sudocreme in the evening to sooth, works a treat - nose soft and no redness! You’ve got to do every day though, even when there’s cloud cover.

Gold Label Sunguard. It's a thick white paste that goes soft with heat. Doesn't smell so they're happy to have it on and it's a proper sunblock. My very pink nosed cob lives out 24/7 and gets his on once a day - it picks up the dust and dirty so gives it an extra layer of protection.

I tried a mask with nose net but Saffy hates it and just blows her nose all the time - so pm me your address if you want it! Then tried sun block which didn't work. Have been using sudocream for 3 weeks now and it's amazing, no sun burn and only have to apply once a day!

This barrier hygiene stuff is the best I've found:

Sudocreme is good for healing burnt noses, but doesn't offer any protection, and IME is too easy for them to rub off, as are a lot of the thicker lotions. (My horse wipes it on the other horse and my dog :p) I now use the barrier hygiene stuff, which soaks in, and it's working well for her :)

I've used Ozvet Sun Off for the last 2 years & have had good results with it - no sunburn at all on a very pink nose.

It does say it lasts 2-3 days but I apply it daily as we have a river in the field & mine are often in there eating the river weed so it does get washed off. However, sometimes in the evenings it looks like there isn't any cream left on there but she is never burnt. The couple of times I haven't been able to apply it she has come in with a burnt nose.

There was a lady at a yard I was at and she stiched an old tea towel to the noseband of a headcollar and made sure that it came to the end of her horses nose, it worked. Did look a lit like a version of a foreign legion hat, but hey
