I have a gypsy cob who is growing a fantastic mane - but the tail which was lovely and long has stunted itself just above the hocks :( how can I get it to grow? Help please.

Biotin helps hooves and mane and tail growth. You could try putting Megatek on the tail. Could something be chewing the tail though? Seems strange the mane is growing well but not the tail.

What do you use to brush it with?
I find using a mane and tail conditioner and then teasing out any tangles very gently is best way to get a thick tail. I see a lot of peolpe use the plastic curry combs and their horses tails are very thin.
Also in winter (when there's no flies to swot) I spray my horses tail with plenty of conditioner and then put it into one big platt, and that tends to keep a lot of the mud off it so I don't have to yank out handfuls of hair to get it clean, and the conditioner seems to help keep the mud from sticking to the hair.
And yes, I recommend biotin for hair and hooves.

My Clydie - lost her tail around Xmas time - really not 100% sure how it went, I think her now 3yr old filly may have chewed it off.

I have been spraying it with a Stop Chew type spray - it tastes very bitter in the hope that it will stop her now.

Avoid brushing it out - I only do Clydies tail for shows then I wash it well and use masses of conditioner on it, finger comb it through before rinsing out the conditioner, then I finger dry it, teasing out the tangles with my fingers. It prevents the hair from being broken. Keep it well conditioned.

Also make sure that you have no Hawthorn or Brambles in the field - if you have fence them off with electric tape to keep her away from them - they catch and pull hair out.

Finally you could use a tail bag to protect her tail from everything.

Feed it seaweed, my hunter had an AWFUL tail after a lamb ate it, she just stood there! If whatever has eaten it is now removed add seaweed supplement (NAF do a great one) and follow instructions. Mine now has a lovely thick tail again! So pleased. Also Soya oil benefits hair growth and fish oils, like for humans nails and hair. But honestly we tried rubbing in hof ointment everything and nothing else worked. The seaweed also makes dapple greys SHINE! Goodluck!

When my boy's tail was looking a bit thin when I first got him, I was told not to brush it as it encourages growth apparently and also means you're not breaking bits off. Just shake dirt/bedding out, and finger comb with plenty of spray detangler/conditioner xx
