My horse has poor teeth and is on a diet of simple systems feed and grass (hopefully will go back onto feed he can grind eventually but had a fractured tooth and already has an overbite so hay was getting stuck in his gaps)

The dentist has advised me to take him off straw to avoid him eating it as it gets stuck in his gaps- unfortunately money is a large issue and straw is included in DIY price as grown on the farm. Can anyone suggest a cheap but decent bedding? (surrey area) The box is rubber matted but he is 17hh so needs a decent sized bed

I want to turn him over to day time t/o but his recommended amount of simple systems feed per day is 15kg!!! Does anyone know of any good wall-mounted troughs or similar things so i can leave him with this amount for the night? I cant leave it for him in a skip because he will just tip it over and it does need to be a bit 'special' proof because he is big and playful

Thanks in advance

If he can have grass, can't he go out 24/7 and just come in for feeds as needed?

Money wise, you're looking at feeding, what, nearly a whole sack of feed a day???!

Fast fibre , any of the Allen and Paige range that are soaked would be ideal as food , the fast fibre is a good hay replacer . And you could add chaff . Also linseed in the microniseed form is so finely ground he'd be ok with it and its cheap look for Charnwood milling stuff .... Keeps the weight on them too . Bedding wise , recycled/shredded paper is great :)

My old dentally challenged mare has total hay replacer diet, and she has at least two of the large tub trugs morning and night, sometimes set in an old tyre to stop them tipping (out in her paddock). They are only half full because she seems to need to get to the bottom to grab each mouthful against the base, maybe that is why your lad gets his feeders all over the place? Mine has Equibeet (same as Purabeet but cheaper) and Grazon grass pellets (same as SS but cheaper :) )
As regards bedding they are all much the same sort of price - shavings, rape straw, miscanthus.
