He had to have an enema last night... He has been poohing fine, but yesterday I noticed he was straining and nothing was coming out. I thought I would see how he was when he came in from the field, but he was still doing it, so I got the vet to come and check him over. I know I am a neurotic owner already, but I just thought it was better to have him looked at rather than keep worrying.

The vet checked him over, and everything was fine. So she put a finger up his bottom (he was so good, never moved) and found some hard pieces... lovely! So she gave him an enema, and again he was an absolute star!

They are going onto shavings today because they are so messy in there and at least with shavings I can have a thin bed (I have Equi-Mats) and big bankings. Do you think he will be ok on shavings???

ahhhhhh bless him! What a good boy!

Im sure he would be fine on woodchips, what is he on at the mo?

We had a mare and foal on a shavings bed for a short period of time last year - and it didn't work terribly well.

The foal got an awful lot of bald patches where he had been lying on the rubber where the shavings had moved - and so they were moved back to a deep straw bed after a week.

He is on Nedz Bedz at the moment... but because Hannah trashed it completely when she had Troy, it needs either completely redoing in that, or swapping onto shavings.

Oooo... AmyMay, that is a good point!

YO wants me back on shavings asap though because we buy the shavings from her you see, whereas the Nedz Bedz I bought myself from my local feed merchant.

Poor troy... bet that was uncomfortable for him

The pair of them are certainly testing your emotions, aren't they? Glad he's ok now

He's certainly a bonny lad.

I bet she does! LOL.

Just keep your shavings bed deep enough for Troy not to go through to the rubber.

We use rubber and shavings once they get to a week old.
Taking it back to a 3/4 bed and have never had problems with foals rubbing joints etc.
Not like we did before we had mats and used straw when they always seemed to be scraping themselves on the concrete no matter how much bed there was.

id personally put them on a nice deep straw bed, thats what Blossy will be going on next year - with her equimats underneath.

However if you can do a deep shavings bed (and can afford it!) then id do that!!

Glad to hear little Troy is ok again now x

started to worry when i read your post as i had problems with mine not passing anything - so much so he had loads of enemas, 3 lots of parafin down his throat & laxatives, if they didnt work he was due for the operating table the next morning as he hadnt passed anything for 2 days.

Hope Troy is ok after just the one!

Poor old Troy, glad he's sorted now!

If your banks of Nedz Bedz are fine, why don't you use those for the bedding area and use new shavings for the banks? Old stuff will give a more solid base that his feet shouldn't go through so he shouldn't scrawp himself and it will also be warmer for him. I would also - and you'll hate me for this I'm afraid!

- leave the bedding down for the first few weeks in a semi deep litter. Just take the droppings and very wet out.(I turn the bed over so the old but dry stuff is underneath and scrape off the very wet; this way, the bed stays better settled which is better for Troy. Forget pristine clean sheets for a while which will ruck up when he moves; he needs a safe base not one where he could lose his feet when he has a frilly in the box, even if you do have rubber, it could still give him a nasty jar and fright. It's a shame you have 'COPD' as straw is by far the bedding choice for foals so I understand your dilemma but forget the deep-clean housework for a few weeks; it doesn't last forever!

You're too kind AmyMay, stop it, I'm blushing!

It's all from experience in one way or another and my paranoia (spl?!) of them hurting themselves after you've taken so long and spent so much to actually get them! Think it's called something like 'spoiling for a ha'porth of tar'!

I don't have COPD

...

I get a nasty rash from using straw and very very itchy skin...

The only problem with the Nedz Bedz is that it is a little slippy on the mats. He is also choosing to lie on the bare mats (where Hannah has pawed) as opposed to the bedding??? Very strange colt...

I have kept the Nedz Bedz bankings in one area of the stable where he lies, as they are very strong and compacted now. Then put a shavings base and bankings in the rest of the stable. I have packed it all down and put it quite deep for the first few days. The bed underneath was disgusting... and the problem is Hannah paws it all up whenever she needs a poo (something she has always done from the day I got her) so all the wet keeps being disturbed and it smells really strongly because she came in season the day after Troy was born! Little hussy
