My 10 month old JRT, Bella, has been a bit poorly. She vomited for the first time in her life 3 days ago, think it shook her up a bit as she seemed very upset and dithery. She was fine after a while though (about 2 hours later and she was running round the house being her normal annoying self!), and has been fine until last night. It was about midnight when me and OH went to bed, Bella had already taken herself to bed so I went to get her out and let her out for a wee, and I found her wretching in her bed. I let her out and she wretched abit more (sorry for TMI!), nothing came out though, and she then started eating grass- like, REALLY eating grass! She was really trying to get something out of her tummy but nothing came. Gave it about 10 mins and then brought her back in and put her back in her bed (which is in our bedroom, so we could keep an eye on her).
Throughout the night she was gagging quite badly, we took her out about 3 times throughout the night but she still wasn't sick. She eventually fell asleep at about 3am. Woke up this morning and she seemed better, but then started barking which made her cough as if she had something stuck in her throat. Again, nothing materialised. Took her for a walk, she was 100% her normal self, just coughed a couple of times.
Since then shes been sleeping quite a lot, which isn't that unusual (shes quite lazy!). She still occasionally wakes up and wretches/coughs.
Original thought was she ate something funny, but she doesn't get given any human food- the only thing shes had thats different to her normal food was a rawhide chew a few days ago. Then we thought maybe she got something stuck in her throat, can't think what though, unless it was some of the chew. She does love sticks so wondered if she ate some bark.
Don't know what to do really, she is eating and drinking and passing both solids and liquids, she is basically 99% happy in herself except the occasional wretch..
Should we take her to the vets? Is there any foods we should give her that may help? Or should we just let her deal with it as she isn't in any pain and is totally happy in herself?
She is the first dog I've owned, and she is very precious to me, so I'm particularly anxious and was all prepared to take her to the vets this morning but she seemed a lot better, but shes still not 100%. Also, the vets she is registered at is an hour away (at my parents house), can I take her to another one if it comes to that?
