Hi all I have an update ?
We put Merlin on steroids last Friday there is still some sweating on right side of neck but not as bad and he seems happy in himself. Senior vet has visited examined him etc and says it is connected to his problems last July it’s impinging spinal cord high up in neck so wobblers ?
My plan I think is to move him to a 6 acre field a couple of villages away with my friends horse who has just retired so they can retire and live out together. That’s my riding done he was always going to be my last horse. Such a shame he is a smashing boy only 10 yrs old and I bought him aged 3. Now got to decide whether to move his mini shettie elderly companion too but he has Cushings and feels the cold so tempted to keep him at current yard at least for the winter ?
So sorry for you but at least you know what is wrong and can move forwards with a management plan..
It’s ok to grieve the loss of future plans x

Thanks for your reply Birker and sorry you lost a horse to wobblers that’s very sad ? Merlin actually hasn’t been strong to ride very soft is the mouth and relaxes long and low I used to ride him in on the buckle mostly out hacking
Its ok its just that i know a couple of people that have wobbler horses who've said they can be very strong through the neck, this was very much the case with my horse Rommy and he used to do a really weird canter that was like a really strong disunited canter but it threw you up and out of the saddle instead. Strong to ride and a nightmare to lead without the chifney. Thought that it might have been a common denominator. I personally wouldn't pts so i could get a new horse but can see how people do.

Like someone said its ok to grieve for opportunities lost. I was devastated when I could no longer jump Bailey my last horse, as it was a huge source of enjoyment and why I'd had a horse. Just hacking became our new joy. I was lucky to still be able to ride, when you are a one horse owner it can be a tough decision.

At least you wont have to have your horse pts but I can appreciate you must feel very upset at not being able to ride anymore. Keep your chin up x

Thanks Birker for your support and kind words. My first horse Sam (25 yrs ago) had to retire from jumping (like your Bailey) at 11 yrs due to hock arthritis and at first I was very upset when I watched my friends BSJA but Sam was fab to hack and my soul mate so I kept him as a lovely hacking horse. Like you did with Bailey too ?
I did shed a tear for Merlin tonight but not so much because I can’t ride anymore more because I worry about him ?. He is a very very kind and genuine chap ? just feels unfair on him - you probably felt the same with your 10 year old Rommy
