Got a phone call just before I finished work from the YO but thought he would be asking me to put his horses in, so I cancelled the call as I was in a lecture and tried to ring him back when I got out 10 mins later. No answer. I set off home and was about 5 mins away from home and he rung again.

He said that Gin had cut her face, at this point I wasnt worried, and then he said he had rung the vet as it was quite deep. My heart sank. I rushed back to see her. I pulled up and she whinnied as soon as she heard me.

Poor girl has cuts and scrapes all over her face. My poor little horse. We think the wind has blown open the gate slightly and she has tried to get through the gate to the haylege, panicked and gone backwards catching her face. She had a cut to her cheek bone, has scraped loads of skin off all over her face and her jaw was really swollen. She was desperate to eat but couldnt iopen her mouth, and was whinneying every time she saw me. She looked to be in so much pain.

The vet came and wanted to sedate her to put in the local anesthetic as he thought she might object with it being on her face. She usually isnt bothered by anything like that so he twitched her instead and she was as good as gold. She just stood there whilst he stitched her cheek. He then looked in her mouth and she has a really deep cut to her lower lip. He stitched that and she didnt even flinch. He couldnt believe how good she was. She had 2 more injections and she has antibiotics for a couple of days.

Im now going to go and give her her tea. She couldnt have anything straight away with her having the local in her lip. Shes absolutly starving.
So thats us 2 out of action for a couple of weeks.

Thanks guys.
Im really worried about her. Ive just been to give her her tea and she couldnt eat it. She got so frustrated she kicked it all over the floor.

She really wants to eat but just cant do it.

Poor horse. Big hugs to you and the poor girl. She sounds like she was a little gem for the vet. Hope she gets better soon. At least two weeks isn't too long and she should make a complete recovery - it could have been a lot worse.

Is she unable to eat because she can't chew? If so, could you soak her feed to make is more of a liquid / paste so she could eat it and not put much / any chaff in? What did the vet say about her not eating?

Hope she gets better quickly.

Its really strange, its as though as soon as food touches her muzzle she pulls her head away. It wont even go into her mouth. I tried putting loads of sugarbeet in to make it more palatable but she wont even eat out of my hand.

shes so desperate to eat it too.
Vet didnt think eating would be a problem once the anasthetic had worn off.

I really dont know how long to leave her before riding her. I guess I will have to see how well the cuts heal. YO has fixed the fencing so we can have a loose school and a play while I cant ride her. I will definatly need my body armour when I do get back on.

The vet was relly shocked. He was expecting her to be really naughty.

Thankyou. The vet commented on how pretty she was too. Im hoping the hair will just grow back as in most places she hasnt broken the skin. Shes just very sore.

Thankyou. I hate seeing her like it. She just wants me to be there with her and give her cuddles. She cant even cuddle though as she's too sore.

Poor YO is blaming himself. It really wasnt his fault, its just one of those things. He was fantastic and stayed with her until I got there and when the vet was there.

I know, she didnt even move a muscle. Before the vet came she wouldnt even let me near her head to look.

YO had put powder on her wounds, called the vet and tried to feed her all by the time I got there. Hes also going to check her before he goes to bed tonight.

Im really worried about her not eating or drinking. Im going back down in a bit to try and persuade her to have something.
The things we do for horses.

Is it tomorrow Grace goes to the vets?

Yes, I have to get her there for 9.30am

Have you tried something that turns into a mush just to get her to eat? A friend had a horse with an abscess under one of its teeth and as she works for Dengie she got some of their alfa pellets, soaked them in warm water and it turned into a mash stuff which the horse ate

I hope everything goes Ok for you. She will probably be as sound as a pound and tracking up equally once you get there.

She wont even open her mouth to get food in although shes desperate for it:( poor little girl. She gets frustrated and kicks it all round her stable. Its so hard seeing them like that. Im just going now to try and persuade her to have some food.

Is she on bute......probably needs something to take the edge away so she's not feeling the stitches so much?

Hope she's ok - I do sympathise - gate injurys are no fun.

Oh no

I hope she's feeling better soon. I'm sure she'll get the hang of eating and drinking again pretty quickly - it probably all feels a bit strange and her lip is no doubt pretty sore... Brave girl - animals never fail to amaze me with how well they cope with things.

The vet gave her an injection last night and she has her medicine to take for a couple of days. Shes on a powder thats stronger than bute but cant remember what is called.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I went down last night again and she still wouldnt eat. I left her with some hay on the floor and the YO put her a net in when he checked them at about 12.30 and tried to feed her but she was still too sore.

I went down first thing this morning and gave her her medicine. She was not a happy bunny when the suringe came out and stood at the back of her box. She had eaten some of her net so I gave her breakfast which she soon got the hang of.
Ive been down again tonight and cleaned the scrapes and put on more cream.
The swelling has really gone down round her muzzle and shes feeling loads better.
Her lips are still very sore and she will pull away if you touch the bottom of them, but overall shes loads better.

Thankyou so much for all your well wishes.
