horse has done something to his hoof/fetlock, god only knows what. Was being ridden (not by me) and pulled a shoe off. Apparantly farrier also put a nail in to high in same foot a couple of days later (not sure how true this is).

Anyway horse been bit lame and heat in his foot/leg for nearly a week now. Had vet out on friday and he is on a small amount of bute.

Had a suggestion that I should cold hose the hot bit off leg, so thought would give it a go,as it wont do any harm. Noticed that when it was drying, it was steaming, should this happen?

If any suggestions how i can help poor horsey, greatfully recieved

yes its just the heat generated from the horse as its drying the wet leg!

what about poulticing the foot in case there is an abscess forming where he put the nail in?!!?

what did the vet say when they came?

vet just thought he had knocked himself. No sign of abcesses as of yet, hoping that he wont get one. He is still out in the field 24/7, vet didnt mention box rest. His leg isnt swollen, just hotter than normal. Its not burning hot, but not quite right.

If you can hose it at least twice a day for at least ten minutes each time, that will help alot.

My mare did the same thing in the field and it took a long time to heal!!!But we hosed it regularly and that helped alot.

Did the vet take the shoe back off. One of ours had his shoe knocked back on after it had been loose for a while. He went hopping lame, turned out he had a corn and having the shoe put back on tight aggrevated it - it was a different farrier and we'd assumed he'd done something wrong but was just one of those things.
Shoes off, a week in and a couple of sachets of bute and he was back to normal.

get the the shoe off a.s.a.p then start polticing for about a week so if any thing is brewing you are catching it before your horse becomes a cripple you can still turn out as long as poltice has duck tape all over it to keep it water proof!
