Set off to a show today with Taf and his neighbour, I put them both in my trailer with the stallion guard up as they are both a little boystrous!
Anyway 15mins into the journey I could see that there was allsorts going on in the back of the trailer and Taf was bucking and throwing himself about at poor Harry. I stopped and took a quick look in the back to ensure he hadnt got his foot caught in the haynet or anything. He had trashed his boots and threw his shoe!
No showing for Taf today, anyway by the time we got to the show another 20 mins later Taf had obviously jumped on his leg just above the coronet band he took all the skin off and made a slight piercing just on his coronet band.

Decided best thing was to leave Harry at the show as these 2 obviously cannot travel together and take Taf home, he continued to fall out with himself all the way home which is very out of character, once we landed i took the opportunity to take a proper look but Taf was a very unhappy bunny and held his leg upto his belly being unwilling to put weight on it, had a further feel and there is some swelling around his fetlock but no obviosu injury and no heat -

Couple of questions then
Would you turn out to keep him mobile?
Do we think the coronet area is more sensitive than other areas which is why what seems like a superficial injury more painful for him?
Is he being a big wuss?

My money is on him being a wuss, but then i cant feel what is going on!

Any similar experiences or opinions gratefully received, he is not normally unwell and doesnt appear lame when walking apart from him over exagerating the lift and almost touching his tummy when he moves!

Also in new lounge

I don't know what tikino has to say a bout ifors but when I've used them I find they can be very bouncy which can mean that the horse shifts about a lot to keep its balance.

My mare used to lean the wrong way in the trailer and scrabble for balance. She once pulled her travel boot down and then ripped it and punctured just above her coronet. She is a tough pony though and didn't appear sore at all so being a cruel mummy I took her round her jumping class before taking her home. Since then though I have never travelled her in travel boots I either using brushing boots, bandages or nothing at all and she is much better and hasn't injured herself since.

I also only use brushing boots, bandages or nothing on my tb as the only time I put travel boots on is the only time she has made a racket in the trailer.

If he isn't limping when he walks I would probably try to keep him mobile to keep the swelling out but if he is lame or it looks even vaguely like it might get infected then get him some help as I think an infection there could be a real pain to get rid of.

My big mare does this too in our IWT - unless I give her whole trailer with full breast/ breaching bars . Some friends with same problem just leave back divide attatched to opposite breach bar hole so horse has all of width at back - problem if you need to travel 2 tho'

(have just embarked down the lorry route for this reason !! expensive bloomin' creatures!

I have just put my wagon on ebay - as he was quite happy in the trailer with company. I guess the problem is the 2 that travelled are out to prove who is topdog and they hadnt sorted it out before the journey together - needless to say I wish i had taken the wagon they could have had a whole stall seperating them. They certainly wont be travelling in the trailer together again!
Good news thhough Taf is sound, just a bit sore and some swelling probably due to concusion!
On a lighter note too, it was the first time my x had driven the trailer with horses in and it was like world war 3 in the back. I have to laugh, as i'd probably have had babies!!
