so little old flint has had a runny nose (mucas) for the last 2 days and got a text from a friend to say he was non stop coughing this morning and ladt night and it was really rattly...so looks like its another trip out from the vet to give him honey and lemon and for me to wrap him up in a scarf and wooly jumper!!

the photo's were taken a a month or so ago now. he was stuck in for like a week, then out for a couple of days and then back in because of the snow and now out again. air flow is good in the stable, he has his own window etc, but with staying in i dont know if the dust from the shaves has caused it (i soak his hay and i dont mean a quick dunk!) would you leave it a couple more days or get the vet out for a check up? id rather have a vet bill than an even poorlier pony!
 
Is he constantly got a runny nose ? Is it coloured ? ...Reason I ask is, one of the ponies on the yard has been diagnosed with COPD , hes had a cough for a few days then it goes away and he has the white mucus coming from his nose, it is white in colour, I did have my suspicions when he arrived , he has a rasped like breathing also .

Hope its just a cold x
 
he's been tested AGES ago ago as i thought he might of had COPD a couple of years ago, its green mucas and its either out his nose or coughing it up. a copuple on the yard have had the same thing so im hoping it just a cold and its quickly passing!

I've never had the vet for a cold - and personally wouldn't unless the termparture was elevated, and the horse depressed and not eating.

However, you must do as you feel fit, it is after all your horse, and not everyone would agree with me.

Honestly the more turnout the better. Head down in the field is always better than even the best ventillated stable.

Green snot, sounds like an infection, call a vet, better safe than sorry. I know a girl who's pony had a cough then it stopped so she did'nt call the vet out. The following winter she noticed its laboured breathing . Turns out that this cough was the start of it and it had an infection in its lungs which was treated wiv antibiotics. Unfortunately because it was left for so long it caused irreversable damage to the lungs...
 
he always seems to get one, but it starts in the sumemr with the season changes...sounds weird i know. its normally upper respotory (is that a word! lol) rather than lower but the more i think about it the more its a call to the vet!! thank you
