Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any words of re-assurance they can offer?

My dales pony escaped last night and ate a load of goat feed. We have had the vet out today and they have done whatever they need to do but i was wondering has anyone else's horse ever eaten something it shouldn't like this and was your horse okay in the end? I'm really worried she won't be okay because i found a website saying that goat feed is lethal and it damages their heart and they have to get put down.

Thanks.

If your vet seems to think your pony is okay I shouldn't worry too much and don't pay too much attention about what you read on the internet! :)

Listen to ur vet not goat websites. My dog ate a load of salt last year (who knew dogs could climb kitchen sides, open cupboards and select the one harmful item in there) and according to internet he should be dead but vet can find nothing wrong with him. Good luck and stay positive

My friends horse got out one nigth and eat 30 feeds and a few of them had different antibiotics and steriods mixed in and quarter a bag of unsoaked sugar beet and then went to a show the next day and ate freshly cut grass and was fine.... Horses surprise us.

Hope your pony is okay.

Xx

I assume your vet would know of the risks, if any, with a horse eating goat feed. If they are satisfied that your pony is OK I would guess that you are worrying unnecessarily.

Thanks everyone, that actually makes me feel a lot better- especially about the horse that escaped and ate all those things!

You hear so many horror stories about horses eating the wrong things and she is my first horse so when things like this happen it feel like a nightmare!

Hopefully she's a hardy pony! She's on a diet so she probably thought it was amazing! Even though we're all panicking like mad!

Could you check the bag for ingredients and phone the manufacturer? The site pronouncing it is lethal for horses is in the US I think so may not be applicable here and of course no guarantee it was in the food your pony ate.

My pony ate half a bag of sugar beet cubes  (someone tipped it out in the paddock to get rid of it :o )

Grass clippings (also tipped out in paddock)

water dropwort :eek: - that very nearly did for him :o

The above was all the same pony :o and I have only just lost him at nearly 37  Ponies are incredibly tough, I hope he OK.

I wouldn't worry about it too much - can't think what would be in goat feed that would be lethal to a horse. If sheep eat horse feed then this can be lethal I believe due to the iron content I think? Not sure if goats would be the same? But, the other way round? Hmm, can't think what would affect a horse. One of our old horses ate a load of dried sugar beet once and also scoffed a lot of dried concrete powder after he broke in to the feed room!! He lived to the grand old age of 36 so never did him any harm (he also threw himself over a barbed wire fence once and got himself stuck in a ditch over night - think he was a horse with 9 lives!)
