i dont know what to do with Nook... he has such a delicate stomach.

hes eating james welbeloved and all i have done is change flavors of changed from same kibble to large kibble, and hes not feeling well :(

hes had this new bag of small kibble for a few weeks, and for the 1st few days his poo was a bit runny ( to be expected from change i thought)
then he was fine then he lost interested in food (due to the heat i thought) so i added a bit of water to it as i thought he was finding it dry or boring, and he started eating again.
but yet again hes got the runs. i dunno what to do with him :(

Give him some scrambled egg - will help 'firm' things up if you are sure he hasn't eaten anything else to upset him. It maybe the ingredients are in a different quantity or something.

Have you looked at Skinners feeds? they are hypoallergenic ie wheat/.gluten free like JWB but also have other feeds, they are also half the price of JWB.:D

What breed is he again?

Sorry Serena but I'm finding the timeline a bit confusing and why change the size of kibble? What exactly is the type of JWB he is on now and how long has he been on it?

Have you or would you try him on raw? Or another brand, some brands don't suit all dogs.

How is his weight? Some GSD have very sensitive stomachs and some have food absorption and pancreatic problems. Vets can have a look at this.

german shep x leonburger

he dont help himself either coz he eats it if hes done it in the house, which then makes him sick... its a vicious circle!

I've just Googled pancreatic insufficiency in the GSD (not that I think he has that for definite!) and on another forum I see a few people with sheps have had problems with JWB and runny poos (my issue with it was **** coat condition) - Arden Grange is a decent food made for and by GSD breeders if you want to keep feeding him dry kibble or feed him a plain diet for a few days, chicken, tuna, rice etc.

timeline?

kibble size was a mistake, i shopped at 2 differnt shops 1 sold a large bred bag and the other an adult bag, he is now on adult turkey and lamb the small kibble. hes probably been on it at least 2 weeks.

whats raw? i thought JWB was a good idea as my vet was pleased he was on it. what other band would you reccomend? and how long would u expect him to get used to it?

he weights over 40kgs at the moment, although i thought he had dropped some weight recently so iv been feeding him 3 times a day. hes been to the vet before with this problem, which anitbiotics sorted out.

I meant that I wasn't understanding your timings properly.

My fella is 40kg too and it is a good weight - I know Nanook is hairy but I like to see the back ribs when a dog is at full stretch/panting/has his head down. Maybe the large breed type has more protein and that has thrown him.

Keep him on it for now and be aware that adding one meal a day will give him the runs as much as anything else. If you want to bulk him out, stick to the two meals a day and add oils, particularly fish oils, eggs, natural yoghurt, tuna in sunflower oil etc.

For the future, Arden Grange is best got off a local stockist, it's cheaper that way.

Raw is raw - raw meat and bones. It can be a bit of a handling but it is a great way to feed, especially for sensitive dogs. My dog is protein intolerant so he has raw days and dry kibble days (never mix the two) - PM KarynK for more advice.

I am sure he will perk up soon x

2 weeks ago when i was in "pets at home" someone working there said they would expect him to put on another 10kgs!
iv always feed him adult food, the large kibble was the large breed food which he had the runs with for a few days but then settled.

i guess its probably coz im feeding him more, i just didnt think that would upset him, can i give him the codliver oil the horse is on!?
how often would u add tuna or yogart? would it be an every day thing?

not the best pics, hes not really up for a photo shoot! lol hope u get an idea of how he looks!

Sorry but I see no Leonberger, still think he's a sable shep with soft ears :)
Does he really look different to the fella in my sig? Imagine him with sticky up ears?
This guy would have a tighter coat than yours and a finer head.

I pop in something interesting every other day.

Codliver oil would be fine, for his diet, coat, joints, everything.

My vet is happy with B's weight, he is a lean dog but plenty of muscle. Don't think your fella is overly skinny but a bit more muscle might help, maybe a bit more work on the roads, hillwork, sand work if you are near a beach?

If you're worried - have a chat to your vet,

He looks jsut nice to me in that birds eye view, you dont want him carrying to much weight and some people think because it's a large breed, it needs to pack pounds, its better they are lean than carryng to much, I personaly would feed him chicken and rice as in boiled rice and chicken breast for a good week and whicever new feed you choose add it to the chicken and rice gradually, his will help dry him up before the new food, usally it's best to use the old food with the new but if he is loose there is no point, so I would go chicken and rice, and after a few days if he firms then add new kibble in small amounts and gradually increase till he is on the new kibble altogether.

Pancreatic problems usually present with watery faeces and rapid weight loss, as fat is not being absorbed, for this chappies is the best diet as its low in fat, but you would need a diagnosis and your vet would/should spot it straight away.

He should not have loose faeces after 2 weeks on a feed, JWB is a good brand but some dogs do take a reaction same as any other good brand and a different flavour would certainly upset the balance if he is intolerant of the ingredients.

If you go with the Arden grange or skinners, do it gradually with the chicken and rice as not to cause him more upset, and keep him on the chicken and rice for atleast 2 days before you start the dry kibble and make sure he is firm first, also cut out everything else so you can monitor him closely.

Or as suggested if you want to go raw check with Karyn or Katielou

Agree he looks pure shepherd to me, and I also wouldn't worry too much about his weight. With all due respect to Pets at Home staff the odd one I have spoken too hasn't had a huge amount of knowledge. I have only used JWB once years ago, when I won a bag, and my dogs were sick on it, but in fairness they were normally fed on green tripe so I put it down to that. Try chicken and rice for a couple of days then try kibble again, but with oil etc if you want to add a bit of weight, but I would agree that he probably doesn't need 3 meals a day.
